After much waiting and a lot of rumors and speculation, Nintendo finally released a three and a half video showcasing the core look and concept of the brand new console: the Nintendo Switch. The console, confirmed to be powered by NVidia, seems to be a console that can be detached from its base in order to be fully portable. It has a slot on each side for the attachment of the controller pieces that make it playable in portable mode. These controller pieces, dubbed ‘Joy-Con’, can be used independently to allow for two players or can be combined together to function as a more complex and complete controller. There’s even a piece (which seems to come with the console) that you can attach the Joy-Cons to when it’s docked in order to function as a more full-sized controller. It even will offer a Pro controller similar to the Wii U and Wii that will be a straightforward traditional controller. All of these options seem to be functional with the system whether it’s docked or not, though we’ll have to wait and see if this holds true. The system itself is shown to have a built-in stand to allow for easy placement when on the go if you want to use a controller separate from the device or if you want to play with more people. The trailer indicates that you’ll be able to play local wireless with other people as well, which really drives the whole Portable/Home Console Hybrid theme home. What is especially intriguing is the size of the dock, which looks far too large to simply be an interface to plug into the TV. This could be indicative of it being more powerful when docked, though this is pure speculation on my part. The console seems to be using a cartridge-based system for its games. Speaking of games, based on the list that Nintendo released it looks like there’s already a decent amount of third-party support for the system, which could prove very promising for the system and has been a problem with Nintendo for a while. There’s only so much we can glean from this single video though, and we have to wait for more information, which is sure to come, especially with an announced release date of March 2017! Stay tuned for more! - Teepu |
