Platform(s): Nintendo 3DS If you’re even a slight fan of the Pokémon franchise, you are likely aware of the way that they generally release a ‘definitive’ version of each game before moving on to the next iteration (i.e. Yellow, Crystal, Emerald and Platinum). In that sense, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are the definitive versions of Pokémon Sun and Moon.  Ever since Nintendo decided to release their own official emulation boxes, fans have been scrambling like crazy to try and get a hold of them, often with little luck due to stock issues. Learning from these issues with the NES Classic Edition, Nintendo has periodically been releasing SNES Classic Edition in an attempt to make more available. I finally found one and grabbed one for myself. Let’s take a look at the system as a whole.

Platforms: PlayStation 4, PC I trusted the first Ni no Kuni almost entirely sight unseen. A JRPG by Level-5 that looks and sounds like a Studio Ghibli film? Sign me up! So trusting was I that I even preordered the collector’s edition from Bandai-Namco, during the short preorder time in the summer before the game’s release, when most people didn’t even have the game on their radars. My trust was, for the most part, rewarded with a deep and moving JRPG that, while having some glaring issues like a slow start and a miserable to learn battle system, became one of my favorite games on the PlayStation 3. When Ni no Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom was announced, I was excited but wary. Could it be as good as the first? And how is this little cat boy related to King Tom of Ding Dong Dell? How much of a sequel would this be? I grew only more worried as development teams changed, combat overhauled, new gameplay mechanics added, and more. Thankfully, Revenant Kingdom calmed my worried soul, and delivered a modern JRPG in a tight and compact package that anyone can enjoy.  Player(s): 1
Platform(s): Nintendo 3DS As a franchise gets more and more popular, it will naturally get more and more spin-offs. Spin-offs, in my experience, are generally lackluster and feel like more of a way to keep cashing in on a successful name. This is exactly what I expected out of Detective Pikachu and was surprised to find a legitimately enjoyable game.  Yesterday, Capcom has released Mega Man-themed DLC into Monster Hunter World and it looks great!

Despite this, side scrolling action/platform games have held a place in our gaming ecosystem, always evolving and always offering something enticing for players. Mega Man X arguably started this evolution. With the release of the SNES Classic, I’ve decided to take a step back and look at Mega Man X.  Player(s): 1
Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation Vita With the video game market saturated with beat-em-ups and Japanese RPGs, it takes a lot of work to stand out as something special. Penny-Punching Princess on the Nintendo Switch manages to do exactly this, by twisting the familiar way in which these types of games approach progression. |
