It's not often that racing games drop into our review schedule, and the one we have today is a bit on the basic side of things as well. It's probably more think fair to refer to it as "arcade-style", but we'll to that in due course. Super Engine GT Turbo SPEC comes to us by way of EastAsiaSoft, and is currently available on all major platforms. We're going to be taking a look at it today on the Nintendo Switch, though I'm sure that all versions will be similar to each other. This is going to be a quick one, so let's just jump straight to the review!

Super Engine GT Turbo SPEC is as basic a racing game as one can get. Each race places you in the final position of twelve cars, and it's your job to fight you your way to the front of the pack in order to place high in each race. There are four series of tracks to progress through, from Novice to Pro, with each of them consisting of eight tracks each. You must place first, second, or third in order to unlock the next race, so that means you'll be stuck in your current place in the game until you do so. There are multiple cars to choose from, but there's no actual differences in speed, acceleration, or performance between them. Even though you'd think the game would get harder when you reach each subsequent series, the difficulty stays pretty much the same. I guess it can be argued that the tracks themselves get more complex, but the opponent AI seems perfectly content to race as they always have. There's no rubber banding difficulty scaling here, so you'll just have to learn each track's quirks, and have a bit of luck when it comes to how the other cars perform. Don't expect to find things like speed boosts or items here either, as I wasn't kidding when I said that this was as basic as things get. Hitting cars doesn't even result in a crash, so I'm not even sure comparing it to arcade racing games is entirely accurate either.

Part of me wants to write off Super Engine GT Turbo SPEC as a game too simple to talk about further, but it isn't without a bit of its own charm. The graphics are colorful and cel-shaded, the racing mechanics aren't bad if you set your expectations accordingly, and the tracks within each series seem to all be at least a bit unique to one another. There are only a handful of locales to visit, like beach, desert, mountain, stadium, and so on, but there are essentially 32 unique tracks in this one game. There's also something refreshing about the game's single-minded focus. Your only goal is to get into first place, and that goal can be rather addicting. I found myself replaying races I almost won, and did so even though I knew that it wouldn't have any significant effect on the game as a whole. There isn't anything extra to unlock beyond the next race, so that was mostly for completion's sake only. The game does keep track of your best place in each race though, so there's that at least. I wouldn't say that there's anything too special here, but I liked it more than I expected to, and found myself completing it fully even though I don't think I needed to for this review.

Positives aside, there are plenty of things that might keep players away from Super Engine GT Turbo SPEC, or regretting their purchase if they've already made it. The most obvious of all is the wonky AI, as the other cars don't ever seem to act the way you expect them too. They'll travel in a straight line if you let them, and it can be both easy and hard to get ahead simply due to how they'll always attempt to tackle each course the exact same way. Driving around twisting tracks can be difficult with too, since the controls aren't exactly tight or precise. There's no drifting either, and it can be easy to spin out of control if you're not careful. There are also times when the controls seem to simply lock up if an opponent clips the back end of your car, and the only way to fix it is to stop accelerating for a second before continuing on. I'm not sure if this is meant to be realistic or not, but it was strange, and it cost me more than a couple first place positions. There's also no multiplayer, optional camera angles that are pretty much impossible to use because of the control scheme, and one of the worst soundtracks I've heard in a while. That's quite a bit of negatives, but none of them are outright deal breakers, and this is a five dollar game we're talking about after all.

Fully completing Super Engine GT Turbo SPEC will take most players a couple hours or so, with more time needed if you're having trouble with a particular track. There is no difficulty progression, and there's also no difference at all between the twelve cars in the garage beyond their aesthetics. It's as basic a game as one gets, but I did find it entertaining enough to clear completely. I didn't get first place in all tracks, but I did unlock and finish every race there was to be had. The lack of a multiplayer mode really hurts this game though, as it would've at least given it a bit of longevity. This would never make it to Mario Kart levels of fun, but it would've been a great addition nevertheless. On that topic, there's really no other gameplay modes to keep players around. No practice runs, no Time Trials, no nothing beyond the single gameplay mode. There's not even a Grand Prix mode, as each race is done individually. I have to remind myself that it's not a bad game at its core, but there is part of me that wonders if it's truly finished and complete.

At the end of the day, I don't know where I stand on Super Engine GT Turbo SPEC. It's not a bad game by any means, but it's also very forgettable and not exactly good either. I don't regret the time I spent with it, but I also can't shake the idea that said time would've been better spent with just about any other racing game out there. If you're looking for a short, simple, and most especially cheap, racing game, then this is the one for you. On the other hand, if you're looking for something more robust, fully-featured, or with a decent amount of longevity and variety, then you'll be better off looking elsewhere. It is hard to judge this game too harshly though, as it is a low-priced budget title, so it's up to you if you think it's worth the $4.99 price of entry.

Story: N/A
Gameplay: B-
Graphics: B-
Music/Sound: C
Value: B

Overall: B-

Pros:
+ A simple, arcade-style racing game that isn't without its charm.
+ Graphics are colorful, and have a neat cel-shading look to them.
+ Though not fully unique to each other in terms of aesthetics, there are 32 different tracks, and twelve cars to choose from.
+ Good simple fun, and comes in at a very affordable price.

Cons:
- The opponent AI isn't very good, and the controls leave a lot to be desired.
- There's a distinct lack of gameplay modes here. You can only compete in single races with no Time Trials, Grand Prix, or even multiplayer available.
- The soundtrack is pretty bad all around.
- There really isn't a whole lot here for those looking for a full-featured racing game. It's hard to recommend it for anyone who isn't impressed by its low price.
