By Winfield Players: 1 Platforms: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless is the latest installment in the popular Strategy RPG series by Nippon Ichi Software. The game features a new setting, characters, and gameplay mechanics that make it stand out from its predecessors. The story follows Fuji, a young demon who hates bushido, the code of honor that once governed the land of Hinomoto. He meets Pirilika, a naive and wealthy girl who loves bushido and wants to restore it. Together, they embark on a journey to overthrow Demmodore Opener, the tyrant who imposed the Hinomoto Code of Destruction, a set of laws that encourage violence and chaos. The game retains the core elements of the Disgaea series, such as turn-based battles on grid-based maps, character customization, item world exploration, and absurd humor. However, it also introduces some new features that add more depth and variety to the gameplay. For example, Jumbification allows you to combine multiple characters into one giant unit that can deal massive damage or perform special skills. You can activate Jumbification by filling up a meter that increases when you kill enemies or use certain skills. You should be careful though, because your enemies can also use Jumbification against you too. Hell Mode is another system that lets you unleash powerful attacks after building up your fury on the battlefield. Some characters have a Hell Gauge that fills up when they take or deal damage. Once it's maxed out, they can switch into Hell Mode, which boosts their stats and unlocks unique skills. These skills are very flashy and over-the-top, and they can deal massive damage to your foes. Hell Mode only lasts for a few turns though, so it's not exactly game-braking. Item Reincarnation lets you reset an item's level and stats after maxing out the item while keeping its abilities and rarity, allowing you to create more powerful equipment. The game also improves on some aspects that were criticized in the previous game, Disgaea 6. For instance, the game has better graphics and performance, especially on the PC and PS5 versions. The jump in terms of graphics and performance is similar when going from Disgaea 4 to 5. The game also has more balanced gameplay and progression, without relying too much on auto-battle or grinding. We covered the game on both the PC and on the Nintendo Switch, and it's like night and day between the two. With that in mind there was not any noticeable performance drops in the Nintendo Switch version, though you'd get the best visual experience in the other released versions. The game has English or Japanese voice acting and more localization options, including English, French, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean. While it is a huge improvement, the game is not without its flaws. Some of the new features can be confusing or overwhelming at first for those new to the series or genre. These somewhat confusing aspects include the complex item world system, and the numerous character classes (both existing and brand-new) that the series is known for. The game can also be very challenging and time-consuming for casual players, as it requires a lot of strategy, and even more patience, to master. The game can also be repetitive and tedious at times, especially if you want to unlock everything or achieve the highest ranks. Overall, Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless is a great game for fans of the series or the genre. It offers a lot of content, humor, and challenges that will keep you entertained for countless hours. It's also a good entry point for new players who want to try out the Disgaea series for the first time, it'll just take a bit of a learning curve to do so. If you are looking for a fun and quirky Strategy RPG with a lot of personality and depth, you should definitely check out Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtueless.
