Does it really hold up to the previous game? Can it be called a true sequel, or is it really just a side story while we await another to be translated and released? Bear in mind that this game will not be for just anyone, especially since it talks about breasts... A LOT. Actually, there are very few scenes where that is not the main subject. Now, with that being said, let's take a look at Funbag Fantasy: Sideboob Story.
We begin the story as a character named Lute Hende as over a year has passed since he has ascended the throne of Edelland. The kingdom has since remained at peace, successfully having defended against a previous invasion from the neighboring kingdom of Lingobard. Not taking the failed invasion lightly, King Bazalt I of Lingobard is devising a plan for retaliation. Much of the kingdom of Fronce, including the grand chamberlain Marquis Cuvier, harshly resent Edelland's sudden rise to power. Much of the State of Vacatin are speaking out as well. Tensions only rise from here.
As the story itself progresses, it becomes very clear what is happening and is very predictable. There aren't even any choices as to which direction to take the story until about half-way through, and it's just one choice. However, after the hurdle of making it this far, the story picks up for the better. We begin to see a more clear picture as various countries become further involved with the plot. Some of the fight scenes we finally get late into the story are what held my attention. Is it too little, too late though? From the perspective of someone who cares more about story, it feels like it. Where things stand, and as far as can be gathered, the first iteration felt more complete and worthwhile.
One thing that can be said about the story is its clear intention on what it's about, and that's boobs. It's almost inescapable during the various scenes throughout the game. For a game with literal breasts in the title it's expected, so if that isn't something you're particularly into, the first 30 minutes will lose your attention. The game will go from main story, to boobs, back to story again with absolutely no transition. There are times when the story itself slows to a crawl, and will even pause, just to poke and prod at the various women. Literally!
While I have never played the original Funbag Fantasy, others have said they prefer that game over the sequel. For good reason, since there's seemingly a better laid out plot, a more fleshed-out story, and far more choices presented. It's apparent from the beginning the story wasn't going to be anything special, but it's Funbag Fantasy. What else can you really expect?
Now, the artwork with the visual sound cues. They work okay. They're neither anything interesting nor anything terrible. Some artwork looks especially pleasing to the eye, while others are only serviceable at best. We can see the level of quality across the field between different artists. It wouldn't be so bad if it was only limited to backgrounds and characters, but it's also between side characters and main characters. Even in some of the games I have played of similar concept, the depictions usually aren't that radically different. It can throw someone off a bit if they aren't particularly used to it. The sound works fine until we get looping music. It can be annoying. However, when certain audio cues are heard, such as marching or clanging, we get a general idea of what is going on.
The lost content.
For those who wish to skip the story entirely, such as with the very end of the true ending scene where it crashed at least 3 times on me so far, there is a fast-forward button. However, those 3 crashes cost all progress. I've never had a visual novel game crash on me before (and this was after only the second time I've chosen the same ending), so this is very new to me. All CG and Scene Extra progress was lost. It's something to note, but isn't going to affect this review much since I don't know if it's just my computer, the settings, or the game itself. This meant having to go back through the main story up to the choice points and saving there once again. There is also an auto-play option, which goes at the pace of the story the writers intended to divulge. It's also my favorite option, not having to left-click or hit space bar after every sentence.
CG Collection.
CG Collection.
As far as extras go, it's pretty standard to have CG, Scenes, and BGMs all in one place for when the story has been played through. The artwork presented in the Extras can be pretty good, and it allows a person to go back through thevarious character scenes at their leisure. The BGM is a little underwhelming with how similar much of the music is between each other, but some of it I actually loved. With having 55 CGs, 28 Scenes, and 22 BGMs, along with a story that can feel out of place with most of these scenes, it felt like an everyday run-of-the-mill visual novel with additions added as in-betweens.
Uncensored Title Screen.
The initial asking price of $45 seems a little steep. If picked up on a good sale, it's a decent game to check out. It's clearly not a game made for everyone, and even less so for non-visual novel enthusiasts. If you want a fun time, check out the original Funbag Fantasy. As far as Sideboob Story, it's just a story for fans of the original.
