If you’re even remotely interested in Nintendo, you are likely looking forward to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Earlier today, we gout our last Smash focused Nintendo Direct. Let’s take a quick look at the highlights of the ~40 minute long presentation. Most importantly, we finally know the full roster, with the final additions being Ken as an Echo Fighter of Ryu and the Pokémon Incineroar. Neither of these were surprises, as they had been heavily hinted at, predicted and ‘leaked’ since the game was announced. Ryu is going to play similar to his incarnation from Super Street Fighter II Turbo, with some modern touches. Incineroar is taking his wrestling roots to the extreme in his fighting style, which will hopefully make him quite different from the other Pokémon in the game. Finally, it was announced that DLC characters will be worked on, with 5 coming at about 5.99 each. They will come with their own stage and some special music as well. A season pass will be sold for 24.99 including all of them and a bonus costume for the Mii Fighter if you get it before anything is released. They didn’t completely rule out the possibility of more than that later, but said releasing all of these will likely take about a year. There was also a surprise announce that the first DLC character will be the Piranha Plant, which is an oddball. Though it comes out of left field, it looks like a goofy and fun addition to the roster. Its Final Smash will transform it into Petey Piranha. Sakurai mentioned that people who are early adopters of the game will get Piranha Plant for free. Besides a bunch of talk about each individual mode and showing off some assist trophies, Sakurai talked a bit about the new campaign mode called Spirits. It revolves around this concept of equipping different characters as spirits in order to upgrade your stats as well as giving you abilities. You use this to fight against themed fights which are meant to simulate various characters from various series who are not playable in the game, such as Hal Emmerich from Metal Gear Solid. There were a lot of quality of life features that were nice, and overall this game feels like it’s filled to the brim with features. There’s plenty of stuff for everybody, and I’m just excited to be able to play as Wolf again. Don’t take my word for it though, and check out the full Direct below. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is slated to release for the Nintendo Switch on December 7. - Teepu |
