The original Final Fantasy game was the first game that truly sucked me in and turned me into a gamer. Because of this, I was naturally excited about the new Final Fantasy XV, and seeing a console bundle, well I couldn’t pass it up. Here, I take a look at the bundle and also give you a brief thoughts about the new vs old model PlayStation 4. The box itself has a nice design, with the console presented in the best angle possible, along with Noctis on it. It’s attractive, that’s for sure. The back has all 4 of the main characters posing stylishly. The console itself is all black, but with the design of the game’s moon etched in. This is especially odd since after beating the game, the moon had no real significance. Still, I really like how the moon is simple and almost diminished, in order to further accentuate the logo. The logo, along with all of the main characters’ names, are in gold in the center. I know many have complained about the design, but I really like it. Moving away from the aesthetic design a little, let’s talk about what ports the console is running. On the rear there is an ethernet port, an HDMI port, a special port for the PlayStation Camera as well as the power port. There’s also an easily removable plate to allow for HDD replacement or upgrading, though I feel like 1TB is a pretty comfortable amount. On the front there is the disc slot and 2 USB ports. I really hate how few USB ports these modern consoles have, though I do appreciate the decision to keep the two USB ports far apart to allow more flexibility with plugged in devices. As a quick note, the console doesn’t seem to operate any different from the original model, even down to the extremely loud disc drive. The controller itself is a bit of a disappointment. I love the new design controller. Having a little bit of the light bar on the touch pad I imagined would drive me insane, since I hate the light bar as a whole, but it actually isn’t very intrusive at all. The controller physically and ergonomically feels a bit better too. My complaint is with the Final Fantasy XV special design. That is, the lack thereof. The only thing about this otherwise normal black controller is the roman numerals ‘XV’ on the right handle. I’ve seen so many awesome controller designs, and it’s unfortunate this doesn’t fall under that category. The last thing in the box was the Deluxe Edition of Final Fantasy XV. It has a special steelbook case with gorgeous artwork on it and a slipcase with all the information (to avoid needing to print over any of the art on the game case). There is some mostly useless DLC included. The part that’s really awesome is the inclusion of Kingsglaive, which is an amazing companion movie to the game. As a bonus, I picked up the collector’s edition player’s guide with the console bundle. The guide is your standard, hardcover fair. It has some added tidbits at the end along with bonus artwork and a nice lithograph of Noctis and friends.
As a whole, I like the bundle very much except for one painful problem: price. Asking $449.99 for non-Pro PS4 is a little excessive. Even factoring in the price of the game, which is $89.99, that means you’ll be paying $60 extra for the design and the 1TB. Normally this wouldn’t be an issue, but following in the wake of the PS4 Pro at that price was, frankly speaking, idiotic. Still, if you like the design and you’re into the game and you can get a hold of the console bundle, you’re sure to leave happy. -Teepu |
