Disgaea is a legendary series of tactics RPGs, stretching back to the early 2000s. With the recent move by NIS to port these classic console games to the PC market, the series has been revitalized with a new generation of fans. While Disgaea 2 has been out for well over a decade now (and as such, easy to find reviews for) we thought it would be good to take a look at how the PC port of this fantastic game stands up against other modern PC titles. First things first, gotta take a look at the options menu. It's pretty detailed, though it could use some work. Some of these options aren't explained very well. It's worth noting that, while it says to use the directional keys to navigate the menu, you can actually use your mouse as well. A VERY welcomed feature! The menu has about everything you could want, although the resolution and screen size options are a bit of a struggle at first glance. Graphically, the game has certainly aged. Whether or not it aged WELL is a matter of opinion, though I think that the game is beautiful regardless of the outdated texture resolution. It has a certain aesthetic which is able to last through the years, and one which I greatly appreciate. The visual novel sections are GORGEOUS of course, looking better than most visual novels released even today. The sound quality is also fantastic, the music still sounds just as good as it always did (if not better, coming through a modern system). The English voiceovers are professionally done and sound great as well. Unfortunately, this port struggles to bring Disgaea's tactical gameplay to keyboard and mouse. The controls are slow, and more than a little clunky. This can be fixed by using a controller of course (in which case the combat feels just fine) but this IS a PC port, after all. I had hoped that maybe the combat was updated just a bit for this occasion. It's not too big a complaint as long as you're willing to plug in a controller, but beware if you're planning on playing with just a keyboard and mouse. It's rough. Overall, I would say this is worth the price of admission. Disgaea is a series beloved by many, and this port makes it all the more accessible to new players. The game stands the test of time with its lovely art style, and it's pretty fun if you can get past the combat system's aging mechanics. Disgaea 2 is as fantastic now as it was when it came out, give this port a shot! You can pick it up on Steam for $19.99 or the equivalent in your region. -Justin |
