Back in February of this year, we got a special set in the Pokémon TCG called Generations. This set revolves around the concept of chronicling the journey of a trainer and their Pokémon. The set is split into two subsections, with about 80 cards in the main set and about 30 in the secondary set (dubbed the Radiant Collection). Most of the Pokémon in Generations are actually from the first generation. Why might this be? Why, for their 20th anniversary, of course! As a throwback, cards from the history of Pokémon TCG were pooled together with brilliant new art. There’s a lot of decent EX cards as well, overall making it a solid set from a competitive standpoint. The real charm here comes from the Radiant Collection cards, which contain some of the cutest artwork I’ve ever seen in my life. That’s where the real fun is, in my opinion. There’s no doubt that having a bunch of cards reprinted and thus becoming standard again is fantastic from a competitive standpoint, but the exceptionally gorgeous artwork in this set make for the perfect set for collectors. This is the reason I jumped in. To help accentuate this is the fact that the cards are slightly more expensive to acquire than normal. On top of that, booster packs are not available in the traditional sense. Booster boxes don’t exist for Generations. The only way to get packs is from the special boxes: Mythical Collection (pin, promo and 2 boosters), Red & Blue (figure, promo and 4 boosters), Elite Trainer Box (standard contents that they normally come with) or the Super-Premium Collection. That last one is particular interesting. It’s a beautiful collection that comes with 10 booster packs, a huge collectible box, 3 smaller collectible boxes for carrying cards representing each of the starters, dividers, a Mewtwo and Mew figure, and Mewtwo and Mew promos. The coolest item is the 120+ page art book. It contains artwork from throughout the history of the TCG containing all sorts of fun tidbits and facts about the drawing process, the artists and more. The Super-Premium Collection is a beautiful set of items that is a great way of celebrating the 20 year anniversary. The Pokémon Generations items can be acquired from various locations and is part of the 2017 standard sets. I’ve had the best luck finding them at GameStop stores. Be sure to check it out, and don’t forget to check out my unboxing of the Super-Premium Collection as well. Cheers! -Teepu |
