Player(s): 1-2 (Vs., Online, Local) Platforms: PC Acceleration of Suguri 2 was released on Steam March 7th of this year by indie developer Orange Juice. The company is a circle for game developers, so each game they release can sometimes be a bit different from those they've release previously. Mostly what they seem to produce shooter-type games, with the random board game and/or visual novel thrown into the works to shake things up a bit. Acceleration of Suguri 2 was originally released on 13 August 2011 with the help of one of their publishers, Fruitbat Factory. Besides being the publisher, Fruitbat Factory is usually the localizer for Orange Juice and help them reach a Western audience interested in such games. With the recent surge of indie games now appearing on Steam, they decided to roll the dice and re-release the game on the popular platform. The game itself is pretty straightforward. It’s a 2D shooter fighter that has its own set of mechanics, but other than that it’s easy to get into once you grasp the concept of the game itself. Like most of these type of games, you have a set of characters. In this case those characters are a set of cute looking girls with a random boy thrown into the mix for good measure. Each one has their own set of skills and move sets like any other fighting game. The art is simple, nothing bad nor nothing that really stands out. The story, if you can call it that, is a bit lacking though. You start out with the screen talking about a ship crash, then depending on the character you've selected there is an interaction between them and the character they’re going to first fight. After that, it’s just stage after stage of one-on-one character fights. No real interaction beyond that. The gameplay isn’t bad. It takes some getting, used to which isn’t too good considering how fast-paced the fights usually are. Once you adjust though it can be a bit of fun. You have your usual low and high attacks, a guard, and you have a dash button which you can guess its use I'm sure. Thrown into the mix is a hyper button. You use the hyper button for different reasons, mostly it's used to perform close-range or melee attacks. It offers a new way to use combo attacks, not to mention bigger attacks, if your gauge is high enough. After you win a fight, you get a score and a ranking, along with a silly quote from the character you've selected. There is an arcade mode for just straight fighting, which is a strange concept as even in story mode the line of characters is random except the first and last characters. But I guess you get to skip the dialog in this one. You can also play against your friends online or even locally. There isn’t too much to the game itself. Like most indie games, it’s just a short, but sweet, game. Nothing too detailed in the characters to speak of. On the plus side, at least there isn’t any boring backstory trying to pad the game out. Just take this game as it’s presented. A simple game made to enjoy from time to time. And it’s currently only a nine dollar game on steam, so you might get what your money's worth out of it. That is depending on if you’re into this genre or not. -MCV Driver Sources: http://fruitbatfactory.com/ http://daidai.moo.jp/ https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Company:Orange_Juice Story: D Art: B Sound: B Value: B OVERALL: C+ Pros: +Cute Character Design +Fun and Fast Paced Action +You can play with friends both online and offline.
