May 2, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Merliwuv Description: Ultra Podcast Z is celebrating Ani-May again and this week we were joined by Merliwuv to discuss the nine anime to get to know us! It's questionable how well we got this across, but we did talk a lot of anime and that isn't all that common over on UPZ. We did it by way of a 3x3 so both Merliwuv and Manuel had their own set to talk about in each half of the show. JD didn't have time to discuss his, but you can see it on-screen at the end. Ani-May is just kicking off and we have another four weeks to go so keep an eye out for more anime nonsense on UPZ very soon! Ultra Podcast Z 203 (w/ Tiffany) | A Trip Down Memory Lane... or Maybe Just Episode 2 of UPZ4/25/2023 Live Broadcast:
April 18, 2023 5:30 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Tiffany Description: Ultra Podcast Z originally planned to celebrate Episode 200 by looking back at Episode 2, but weren't able to due to scheduling. A few weeks later we were able to get Tiffany to come back (though not Angie) to re-watch the episode and basically cringe and reminisce about the early days of A-to-J. It was a lot of fun even though there were a lot of technical and audio issues getting this one off the ground, but we did our best. It's also worth mentioning that due to a series of false copyright strikes by the Alt Idol label Codomomental, we deleted all the early podcast episodes that had less than 200 views (since we were unsure which ones would be hit next). Unfortunately this means that not only are they no longer on YouTube, but that at least two UPZ episodes (and nearly all of A-to-J Talks) are now lost media. We're not sure if it's worth ever re-uploading the episodes we do have, but this will have to do for now. Check it out, and maybe tell us your thoughts regarding J-Pop Summit, if you were ever able to go, and what your experiences are. Also, keep an eye out for changes to UPZ as it's something we've been talking about for quite a while now... April 11, 2023 6:30 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Pleiades Description: Ultra Podcast Z started a little late this week and we lost some of our live viewers unfortunately. BUT for those that stuck around we had a pretty fun episode once again featuring Pleiades. We last had him on for Valentine's Day, but this time we had a lot of different topics to cover. We kinda just jumped right into things as we were already running behind start time so keep up with all the talk about One Piece, dubbed anime songs, and other related nonsense. We then talked a bit about the new BABYMETAL x DETHKLOK Tour as we moved into discussing Ticketmaster and how hard going to concerts today is. We're still a little confused as to how ticket scalpers can exist when 90s sitcoms taught us that this is a crime, but who knows. We closed the second half talking about TCGs, mainly Yu-Gi-Oh as Pleiades had just taken part in the Master Circuit series. We talked a lot about the thens and nows about some games, and even some upcoming ones like Disney's Lorcana. This will probably be a topic that we revisit at some point. Keep an eye out for that one! As always, take care of yourselves and each other in these trying times and stay healthy and safe! March 4, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Photaku Description: Ultra Podcast Z crosses the 200 episode threshold and Photaku joined us for a special episode where we were going to discuss the recently announced Scott Pilgrim anime and exactly what makes a show "anime". We did eventually do that, though we didn't quite come to a consensus on that topic, but we spent a surprisingly long segment at the beginning to discuss the recent Scream 6 and the Scream franchise in general. This was a really fun discussion that covers things we usually don't talk about on UPZ and even the asides in the discussion were pretty on point. We did talk Scott Pilgrim and a lot of Science Saru stuff. Science Saru is the animation studio, who also worked on the Devilman Crybaby series, and are pretty much the only real "anime" link to this show. We discussed Teen Titan, Miraculous Ladybug, RWBY, and more in trying to define what is "anime", and while we did sort of agree on a definition, we didn't really agree on what shows MEET that definition. We closed with a brief bit about the recent nonsense regarding Ada Wong's voice actress from the Resident Evil 4 Remake and all we really have to say about that is to never be an ass to anyone for any reason, even if you're not a fan of their work on your favorite video game or whatever. Just don't be horrible. Let's hope that next week we're able to actually have that special episode 200 thing we planned a few weeks ago... March 28, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Dr. Wes JD Description: Ultra Podcast Z has a lowkey 200th episode! We had a lot of plans for this one as we hoped to do a watch stream of Episode 2 with the original cast, but scheduling means that we had to table that for a few weeks, so look forward to that eventually. Then we had the idea of a gaming talk centered around some news and Zelda (since Tears of The Kingdom got a new gameplay video earlier that day) with Janette and we were forced to do a quick reschedule as Janette dropped out and Weston popped in. We still talked Zelda, the eShop closures, and more, but we ditched some of the topics that we planned to cover with Janette so maybe we'll table those for a future episode as well. This wasn't all a wash though as this freed us up to talk more about Zelda than we were initially going to and this lead to a lot of arguments regarding which were our favorites and which we thought weren't very good. We closed out with some D&D news from their upcoming stream, though we didn't mention Manuel's favorite part: the announcement of a Dragonlance TV show. Thanks to Weston for taking the hosting duties at the absolute last minute, maybe we can PLAN an episode around topics for him at another time. What a way to welcome in another hundred episodes! March 14, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Photaku Dr. Wes Description: Ultra Podcast Z continues on its streak with episode 199 and has another trio host episode. Photaku returns, along with Dr. Wes, as we discussed a lot of recent "days". The White Day discussion came and went, with a somewhat wonky explanation by Manuel which is funny since there was an entire episode on the topic (unfortunately one of the lost "First Forty") so take that all just as fun randomness, and not an accurate explanation. Elsewhere there was the talk of "Pi Day" and what everyone's favorite pies were. This naturally circled around to the pineapple on pizza debate, which remains as unresolved as ever. The show moved into the main topic of the night after this as "Mario Day" (March 10) recently happened and we wanted to talk about the upcoming Mario movie from Illumination and more, and did just that. There was a lot about the 1993 Mario movie, and if we liked it or not, as well as some concerns regarding the upcoming movie, especially the tone and cast. Favorite Mario games were also up for debate, with some surprises here and there (Hotel Mario anyone?) so let us know your favorite ones just to even that part out a bit. Beyond that there was a bit about the video game movies in general, comparing all current video game movies to the Sonic The Hedgehog movies, and even randomly talking about the current state of the MCU for some reason. A fun episode that also serves as a brief respite for whatever we end up doing for Episode 200... As always, take care of yourselves and each other in these trying times and stay healthy and safe! March 7, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Janette Photaku Description: Ultra Podcast Z had three hosts for maybe the first time in a year. Fans of the show may remember that this used to always be the format as UPZ followed directly from the first podcast, "A-to-J Talks" which often featured FOUR hosts. There have been some rare UPZs that featured four or five hosts, but it was somewhat refreshing to have a bigger number again. While the topics weren't as open as they are some weeks, we did cover some recent news. Not recent was all the Tommy Tallarico stuff that we decided to cover as Janette had some views on it, and Manuel thought it the dogpiling wasn't exactly all that fair, a controversial topic for sure, but hey, hit us up Tommy! Elsewhere we talked con drinking, Little Caesar's, funko pops, and most especially Johnny Kitagawa and the newly released BBC doc that analyzes the allegations against him. This was a wild episode so check it out, and maybe stay away from all the upcoming/current 18+ anime conventions that are popping up these days as they seem to be train wrecks waiting to happen. Wonder when we'll have three hosts on again? Or if we'll rebrand following Episode 200? Keep watching to find out! Ultra Podcast Z 197 (Retro Gaming w/ Fangy) Retro Beginnings, Fav Games, Fangy's Gaming Club, More!3/6/2023 Live Broadcast:
February 28, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Fangy Description: Ultra Podcast Z is closing out our "Febu-any" streams which were really just a random thing, but somewhat important in that we had an entire full month (five in this case) of shows with no breaks; something we haven't done in a surprisingly long time. Fangy joined us on this one, and this was actually the very first "Febu-any" episode we planned back in January. We had decided to talk retro gaming and we covered it pretty well even though we didn't quite move through all the topics we planned to. A fun topic and we discussed a lot about our favorite games, what we consider retro and lots more. It probably will shock no one that Manuel and Fangy had pretty different takes on all the topics and longtime viewers can probably see the parts where things like Final Fantasy IX, Metroid Prime, and other games that Manuel has ranted about get mentioned. With that said, we did stay mostly on topic throughout, and even though we promised that we'd sprinkle in a bunch of then-recent news topics we had listed in our show notes, we never actually got around to them. All this aside, that idea of a Gaming Club (similar to a Book of The Month Club) sounds like a lot of fun and more people should form them. If anyone has something similar be sure to let us know in the comments as we'd love to hear it. Also, check out "Frog: For Whom The Bell Tolls" and "Uncharted Waters: New Horizons" for our favorite retro games! Ultra Podcast Z 196 (Anime Game Show Takeover w/ Haro) "Um, Actually" & "Anime Connect"... and More!2/27/2023 Live Broadcast:
February 21, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Haro Description: Ultra Podcast Z continues its streak of "Febru-any" episodes as JD took this somewhat off night to host an anime game show takeover. The games we played on this one are actually something of a preview for two panels that he will be hosting at Tora-Con next month. We originally intended to have a few more "contestants" on this one but we were forced to trim things down a little and only a non-video Haro was ultimately able to join us very last minute. This was still a fun show though, and seeing as it ran a little over time-wise, it was probably for the best that we didn't have more people on. Also, this show references two Drink Talk Learn episodes: a still-"lost" episode that featured JD hosting a much more difficult version of "Um, Actually", and an episode that featured Callie talking about the game show "Only Connect". (We have not been able to pinpoint the latter.) Speaking of these games, that's pretty much all this episode is, two anime versions of "Um, Actually" (which is also a game Molly hosted on a different Drink Talk Learn, but with a different theme, so three DTL episodes...) and "Only Connect", which was a lot of fun, if more difficult to play at times. Anyhow, check this one out, play along at home, and let us know if you'd like to see more game show-type content, but maybe with more contestants, in the future. February 14, 2022 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Pleiades Description: Ultra Podcast Z took place on Valentine's Day this past week and we're not totally sure if we've ever done that before... There's a first time for everything though! We had previously talked about how Valentine's Day is one of the worst days to go out and do anything since everywhere is crowded, and it was with this mentality that Pleiades rolled up for this episode! It was a lot of fun and we covered less than half of the topics that we had planned to. That wasn't because we went off track, or got lost, but because we had a lot to say about the things we covered and we also might have over planned this one. Anyhow, everyone was on point and there were a lot of funny bits here and there and it doesn't have as much as the ad hoc topics feel that a few recent episodes have. We also revealed at the top of the show that we are planning on ending (more like we're going to rebrand) Ultra Podcast Z and, while we probably won't do that at Episode 200 as we initially planned, that's something you can look forward to in the future as things like that always serve to revitalize things for a bit. Anyhow, check this one out and let us know your thoughts on our takes and maybe about what you'd like to see in a UPZ rebrand.
