July 18, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Snakz Description: Ultra Podcast Z returned from AX finally! This was going to originally be an episode where we went over AX, our experiences, and then talk a LOT about the anime School Days which Manuel only now found out about. We ended up having a lot more about AX to say though so that's the lion's share of the show. Lots of stuff that no one really talks about regarding the con and how weird it is that Crunchyroll owns just about the entire anime industry in the West now. (Yes, those are two different topics.) Anyway, we did cover School Days towards the end there, but we'll probably table that for another day. Also, our ninth anniversary (A-to-J's that is) is on the horizon! June 20, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nestor Description: Ultra Podcast Z returned, though on a Wednesday instead of Tuesday. This was due to more schedule nonsense and fallout from the AX prep. Nestor joined us for this one though, and we got lucky as Wednesday morning saw a new Nintendo Direct that gave us a lot of easy topics to cover! We talked about most of the new announcements, scattered throughout the entire show, with an added emphasis on the shockingly high price of the Super Mario RPG Remake (59.99!), the low price of the Pikmin 1 & 2 re-releases (40!), and about all the wackiness in Super Mario Wonder. In between we talked about AX nonsense, since it is coming up soon, other gaming stuff, such as games we've been playing/reviewing recently, and even about how Keiji Inafune broke up Manuel and his girlfriend! That last part was kind of a random story, but it was a real one that surprisingly isn't as repeated as other stories. It's pre-A-to-J, but a weird window like weeks before A-to-J started, and topics from those times don't often come up. There was a lot of fun and wackiness here, and we had something of a form to this one. Also, you can catch Nestor's doggo if you look closely enough! We have at least one more episode before we take a small break for Anime Expo, so keep an eye out for that! June 13, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Janette Description: Ultra Podcast Z had something of a break. That's one of the most cliched things to say here, we know, but we did. There was a (somewhat) lost episode "Um... Anime" gameshow following FanimeCon weekend, and then we skipped the following week because of Manuel's ongoing internet issues (RIP to that week's Drink Talk Roll too). We came back this week to talk Summer Cons that we went to, will be going to, and maybe some recent video game stuff. We actually did have a lot of topics lined up but had some issues with host cancellations. Janette showed up though and we were able to talk FanimeCon (which Manuel went to at the end of May) and A-Kon (which Janette went to the weekend right before the show), so it was nicely on point for a change. We couldn't just go for it there though, we had to talk panels, Buc-ee's, and all sorts of older con memories. It was a fun episode even if it felt a little unfocused compared to the recent Ani-May shows, but that's just how it rolls sometimes. Will we be rebranding UPZ soon? February 7, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Photaku Description: Ultra Podcast Z is back to Tuesday after two random Wednesday shows! Photaku joined us this week as we tackled some interesting topics that mainly had to do with the Switch (upcoming Nintendo Direct and new sales records) and Hogwart's Legacy. The latter topic doesn't need any introduction as the game's release, and the reaction to it, has taken over just about every corner of the internet. We're not here to change anyone's mind, but we have our views and they were all laid out here. Elsewhere we talked about Sally Amaki voicing in both English & Japanese, the passing of the creator of the first known AMV, Anime Expo selling out of its first line of badges, and even managed to talk a lot about anime, which isn't something we do a lot on the show. There was a lot of randomness in between as well and it was a lot of fun all things considered. A more structured episode where we had a lot of topics lined up unlike the more freeform episodes that kicked off 2023, so let's just carry on from here! July 12, 2022 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Badman Description: Ultra Podcast Z returns from its AX break with an episode that doesn't feature Nyaru as she unfortunately got the big C over at AX and has been taking it easy following the con. Warren joined and we all recapped the con a bit with some news and nonsense sprinkled in. The opening segment took a bit longer than we intended as we ended up talking a lot about shows we've been watching recently from Stranger Things 4, Marco Polo, The Boys, and Man In The High Castle just to name a few. We then talked a LOT about AX without really covering stuff that HAPPENED at AX. Weird when you think about it, but we are also a lot about the hanging out, the partying, and just experiences overall. Will you be going to AX Ontario and other summer conventions since everything seems in full swing again? Let us know below! We then moved on and talked about some other news topics briefly, like Elon Musk's Twitter deal falling through, the Shinzo Abe incident, and Kem Akamatsu (of Love Hina fame) now becoming a politician? There was a lot there even if we didn't give everything as much time as we probably should have. We're just warming up to a regular stream schedule though as we've had about six weeks of messiness so just keep an eye on us until next week! June 28, 2022 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Description: Ultra Podcast Z returns with its original cast just in time for a pre-AX episode! Nyaru and Manuel are both back and talked about what they're looking forward to at Anime Expo since it is days away, as of this episode's YouTube posting everyone should already be on site! Nyaru had a lot of event plans while Manuel was just looking forward to the parties, but is any of that really surprising? There was a lot of discussion here, food plans, past AX recollections, and even dipping our toes a bit into an Anime Expo bingo thing (that didn't really pan out the way we intended). We normally don't do episodes this close to a big convention but seeing as we didn't have a lot of personal projects at AX that we had to prep for, and seeing as we had to cancel a bunch of "normal" episodes recently, we decided to go through with this one, so keep that in mind while we are all fairly tired. That said, it was a pretty on night and we are all excited in our own way for Anime Expo. If you're going to be going to AX this weekend then have fun and be sure to stay safe and hydrated! September 28, 2021 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Photaku JD (Off Screen) Description: Ultra Podcast Z hits 150 episodes and Nyaru is nowhere to be found! We hit yet another milestone but rather than make a big deal about it (we've had a LOT of "anniversary"-type episodes recently and have at least one more coming up) we decided to tackle a topic we surprisingly don't cover much: anime, namely shorter anime series. The premise for this started with discussions about how Manuel doesn't watch much anime and how we'd compile lists for people who want to watch anime but probably don't want to invest days into shows like One Piece, Naruto, etc. Photaku joined us again this week in his first proper episode appearance (not a tier list or game night) and after a rather long discussion about Genshin Impact and more, we got into our lists. This episode features a few more edits than one usually sees in a UPZ so this truly is a "YouTube Version" but we touched on a lot of animes and it was probably for the best that there were only three of us on this one as we would've got even less out probably. There's a lot of suggestions here in a lot of different genres so let us know what you think about our choices, give us some of your own, and maybe we'll cover this topic in a future episode as we definitely left a lot of ones we wanted to discuss off the table. June 29, 2021 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Pleiades Description: Ultra Podcast Z took an accidental week off but came back with a pretty random episode featuring Pleiades! We had a million little topics to cover on this one but it was always envisioned as a riffing episode with Pleiades without as much form as we usually try for in these kind of things. That said we managed to at least MENTION every small news topic that we wanted from the Tamagotchi Watch to the new Final Fantasy IX animated show. We also had deeper dives into the new (and old) iCarly show and how the internet has changed over the decade it's been on and the death of John McAfee. These are all very different topics from each other and if it seems random well, that's because it is. With that said we tried to keep it interesting and we think we did that. Also now is the time to mention that this video is a mashup of both the live stream version (with JD's active topic changes on the lower left) and Manuel's recording (which had wonky audio this time around) so bear with it as it can get a little rough at times though we think it's still very watchable. There was more covered here but we'd be killing some of the surprises if we just tossed it all in the description, so check it out!
