This was going to originally be an episode where we went over AX, our experiences, and then talk a LOT about the anime School Days which Manuel only now found out about. We ended up having a lot more about AX to say though so that's the lion's share of the show. Lots of stuff that no one really talks about regarding the con and how weird it is that Crunchyroll owns just about the entire anime industry in the West now. (Yes, those are two different topics.) June 27, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Hao Description: Ultra Podcast Z had one last episode in June before Anime Expo took over for more than a week, and we were also on a Wednesday! This date change was due to the fact that J.D. went to an anniversary showing of The Room and we decided to talk about the movie at length, as well as other "So Bad They're Good" movies. We actually talked WAY more about The Room than we probably thought that we would, and this wasn't aided by the fact that we had a lot of relevant stories to share about aspects of the movie, but it was a lot of fun anyway. If only the movie was on some sort of streaming service it would be easier to watch. Guess you just have to go to an event and meet Mr. Wiseau himself. Also, what's up with that remake that was supposed to come out in June? Anyway, outside of the room we covered other similar movies like Birdemic, the works of Neil Breen, Sharknado, and more. We even brought up the fact that Manuel is a fan of Dragonball Evolution and for once we had someone else who's actually seen it say it isn't good. June 20, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nestor Description: Ultra Podcast Z returned, though on a Wednesday instead of Tuesday. This was due to more schedule nonsense and fallout from the AX prep. Nestor joined us for this one though, and we got lucky as Wednesday morning saw a new Nintendo Direct that gave us a lot of easy topics to cover! We talked about most of the new announcements, scattered throughout the entire show, with an added emphasis on the shockingly high price of the Super Mario RPG Remake (59.99!), the low price of the Pikmin 1 & 2 re-releases (40!), and about all the wackiness in Super Mario Wonder. In between we talked about AX nonsense, since it is coming up soon, other gaming stuff, such as games we've been playing/reviewing recently, and even about how Keiji Inafune broke up Manuel and his girlfriend! That last part was kind of a random story, but it was a real one that surprisingly isn't as repeated as other stories. It's pre-A-to-J, but a weird window like weeks before A-to-J started, and topics from those times don't often come up. There was a lot of fun and wackiness here, and we had something of a form to this one. Also, you can catch Nestor's doggo if you look closely enough! We have at least one more episode before we take a small break for Anime Expo, so keep an eye out for that! June 13, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Janette Description: Ultra Podcast Z had something of a break. That's one of the most cliched things to say here, we know, but we did. There was a (somewhat) lost episode "Um... Anime" gameshow following FanimeCon weekend, and then we skipped the following week because of Manuel's ongoing internet issues (RIP to that week's Drink Talk Roll too). We came back this week to talk Summer Cons that we went to, will be going to, and maybe some recent video game stuff. We actually did have a lot of topics lined up but had some issues with host cancellations. Janette showed up though and we were able to talk FanimeCon (which Manuel went to at the end of May) and A-Kon (which Janette went to the weekend right before the show), so it was nicely on point for a change. We couldn't just go for it there though, we had to talk panels, Buc-ee's, and all sorts of older con memories. It was a fun episode even if it felt a little unfocused compared to the recent Ani-May shows, but that's just how it rolls sometimes. Will we be rebranding UPZ soon? This time he challenged two married couples to compete in a trivia competition to prove which of them is nerdier. Will Adam and Jessie declaw the crytpid couple or will Fangy and Mr Fangy devour the competition? A battle so epic, not even technical difficulties could stop it. This episode was very nearly a "lost" episode and has been rebuilt as best as could be done so enjoy it and remember the most important lesson of all: ANIME WAS A MISTAKE! May 23, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel J.D. Description: Ultra Podcast Z took an entire month to learn that the memes are right, Anime Was A Mistake. Ani-May soldiers on with J.D. taking the hot seat he technically is ALWAYS in, but is on-screen this time. Internet issues made us skip a week, and the proximity to Fanime made it so that we didn't have a host lined up for this one, so the final Ani-May episode with Manuel was going to be the one discussing Anime Movies! It actually was a pretty well-done episode all things considered since the picks were there, the usual amount of Manuel saying hot takes was there, and JD even forgot the usual amount of important names while we were live. Let us know what some of your favorite anime movies are, and if you've had any experiences with those weird "Westernized" versions of anime that used to fly in the dark early days of the fandom. Also, since we almost definitely won't cover it live in the show, let us know if you had a good time at FanimeCon since the last minute nature of this episode, and its late upload, are both due to that lovely yearly convention. May 9, 2022 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel J.D. Description: Ultra Podcast Z continues with Ani-May, this time J.D. becomes a NOT disembodied voice and took the stage for a rare physical appearance. We talked shorter anime recommendations again this time (we did a similar episode last May) and we had completely new choices this time around. This episode moved really fast considering that there was no co-host this time around, an idea we had settled on early on actually, so this is something of a different UPZ. As for the anime, Manuel mentions a lot of Go Nagai shows, and J.D. mentions a lot of stuff that Manuel has never heard of, so it was a maybe it was a standard show after all!
