June 13, 2023 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Janette Description: Ultra Podcast Z had something of a break. That's one of the most cliched things to say here, we know, but we did. There was a (somewhat) lost episode "Um... Anime" gameshow following FanimeCon weekend, and then we skipped the following week because of Manuel's ongoing internet issues (RIP to that week's Drink Talk Roll too). We came back this week to talk Summer Cons that we went to, will be going to, and maybe some recent video game stuff. We actually did have a lot of topics lined up but had some issues with host cancellations. Janette showed up though and we were able to talk FanimeCon (which Manuel went to at the end of May) and A-Kon (which Janette went to the weekend right before the show), so it was nicely on point for a change. We couldn't just go for it there though, we had to talk panels, Buc-ee's, and all sorts of older con memories. It was a fun episode even if it felt a little unfocused compared to the recent Ani-May shows, but that's just how it rolls sometimes. Will we be rebranding UPZ soon? May 25, 2021 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Description: Ultra Podcast Z has a smaller show to close out May, and welcome in Summer, as we chose to not go with a third co-host this time around. We also were down to just one host for a long period as Nyaru had a lot of technical difficulties trying to get her Hot Tub setup to work. Yes, you heard that right, there was a lot of random VTuber Hot Tub nonsense in this one in between our random ramblings! Speaking of those ramblings, we talked about Kentaro Miura's passing (well that was mainly Manuel as this was during Nyaru's disappearance), a lot of random AKB stuff, and more on the return of anime conventions. Now, that latter topic would take up half the show but it was in a very different way than how we've covered it over the past year. Seeing how this is Fanime weekend (read: Memorial Day weekend) the sting of missing cons was hard and we discussed going back to the many that are popping up as the country opens up fully. Surprisingly lenient was Manuel who seemed ready to jump to Texas to hit up IkkiCon which was happening that weekend. Cooler heads prevailed but there was a much more open discussion on upcoming conventions and, even though it was decided that cons probably won't REALLY be safe until 2022, you'll soon get your chance to probably see us in person again! May 26, 2020 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Konaru Callie Molly Description: Ultra Podcast Z is still in quarantine and we're coming off our recent Drink Talk Learn stream with the TRUE Episode 99.5! This was originally to be a FanimeCon appreciation podcast as we are huge fans of that particular convention and it was one of many that was forced to cancel its 2020 show, but the podcast turned into something more. We were a little unable to focus on telling a cohesive and linear story here about our first FanimeCons and our favorite FanimeCon memories, but the stories were there and we discussed a lot regarding Fanimaid and other relative nonsense like the issues that maid cafe causes to A-to-J panels at Fanime. In between this though we talked a LOT about food (the origin of "ketchup" anyone?) and some of our earliest drug and alcohol experiences. We did tie some of them into anime conventions, but yeah, there was a lot of randomness in this one. That isn't all of it though as we were considering wrapping up the show and then we accidentally dived into the world of conspiracy theories AGAIN but with a lot more manic energy this time around. Honestly, that crazy abrupt ending is almost worth watching on its own... Oh yeah, RIP FanimeCon 2020 and we'll definitely be back in 2021! May 9, 2020 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Haro Description: Ultra Podcast Z is still in quarantine and all our convention plans for 2020 are done. One of the biggest cons for us every year is FanimeCon in San Jose and in place of us hosting panels at that con, we decided that we'd put together some special podcast episodes where we sort of tackle our podcast topics in a slightly different format. The first one up is our panel on Macross! We haven't hosted this one as many as some of our other ones but we have hosted it exclusively at FanimeCon and were hoping to do so again this year so here it is! Normally hosted by Manuel, Leslie (Haro)m and Racheal, Racheal was unable to make it to this particular podcast so we soldiered on as a duo. With that said we had a lot of fun and covered most of what we do in the in-person panel and arguably a lot more as we managed to fill up a full two hours on this topic! We should probably here reiterate that we are simply fans and while we consider ourselves quite knowledgeable (and exciteable!) on the topic we are by no means experts so keep that in mind as you watch. That said, we covered all the shows, a bunch of characters and tropes, the music, some of our favorite moments, and more! We even touched a bit on Robotech... That topic Macross fans rarely touch. Anyhow, let us know some of your fav Macross memories and also let us know what you think of this sort of format as we are considering using it in the future even without the excuse of cancelled conventions. April 14, 2020 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Konaru Janette Description: Ultra Podcast Z (and most of the rest of the country) is still in quarantine and this marks the last of our "Quarantine Blues" podcasts... for now! This one is a little all over the place as we opened with an easy "Surviving The Quarantine" bit and, after discussing some work-from-home situations, the podcast would continually derail as the topic of baking "quarantine bread" took up a lot of the podcast's time with the live chat viewers loving it. After some other odds and ends, like discussing some of the issues with restaurants like Hooters (and it's not actually the skimpy uniforms) the podcast weaved in and out of legitimate topics like what returning to "normal" really means when all this is said and done and the mess of going to events today when many organizations, including Ticketmaster, limiting options when it comes to getting refunds for postponed events. We also went in depth regarding the problems with the glut of online events that are replacing cancelled conventions. You may notice that the last two topics are sort of a retread, but we tackled them from different angles and included lots of new, developing informations. Of course, it'd be remiss to not keep mentioning that the bread argument didn't continually rear its ugly head so be prepared for that when tuning in! Stay healthy and take care of each other! June 6, 2019 7:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Molly Tim Description: Ultra Podcast Z returns after nearly a month of inactivity with a rather chill episode featuring Molly and Timtastic! We mainly discussed FanimeCon 2019 and our prep leading up to Anime Expo 2019, but we had a lot to dicuss in between! We spent an awful lot of time talking about hentai, eroge, and JAV, specifically "Bible Black" and the possibility of a JAV Cinematic Universe! We also spent a lot of time talking about swatstikas in popular Japanese media in relation to a recent panel we did and we had a similarly long side discussion. Anyhow, this one is very lowkey and chill and we also featured a cat and some live cosplay work from Molly! We weren't completely on point this week as we had a lot of technical difficulties that actually forced us to start 30 mins late, but we put on a good show and covered a lot of topics we missed in our absence! We briefly talked Fanime (the reason for at least two of those skipped weeks) before moving into a lot of new stuff like AKB48's "Teacher Teacher" sales, the new Wa-suta MV, and the current BiS releases!
