We hit yet another milestone but rather than make a big deal about it (we've had a LOT of "anniversary"-type episodes recently and have at least one more coming up) we decided to tackle a topic we surprisingly don't cover much: anime, namely shorter anime series. The premise for this started with discussions about how Manuel doesn't watch much anime and how we'd compile lists for people who want to watch anime but probably don't want to invest days into shows like One Piece, Naruto, etc. Photaku joined us again this week in his first proper episode appearance (not a tier list or game night) and after a rather long discussion about Genshin Impact and more, we got into our lists. This episode features a few more edits than one usually sees in a UPZ so this truly is a "YouTube Version" but we touched on a lot of animes and it was probably for the best that there were only three of us on this one as we would've got even less out probably. There's a lot of suggestions here in a lot of different genres so let us know what you think about our choices, give us some of your own, and maybe we'll cover this topic in a future episode as we definitely left a lot of ones we wanted to discuss off the table. September 21, 2021 6:00 PM PDT Players: Manuel Nyaru JD Molly Callie Photaku AUDIENCE! Description: Ultra Podcast Z has its first community game night! Our Mod, JD, has been suggesting this for a while now but it took last week's Anniversary Episode for Nyaru to yell and make it an actual thing this week. We went simple with Jackbox Party Packs and had a few games in mind that we played with a lot of people both who can be heard on the show and who were playing as the audience. Real fast we should mention that this one is rather long, it has a somewhat slow start, and we had some weirdness with the game audio on the first game (as in there wasn't any audio lol) so bear with that when watching. That said this episode featured Manuel, Nyaru, and JD as usual (though Nyaru dipped around 90 mins in and never came back) and also saw Molly, Callie, Photaku, and Weston play along as well, the latter not on voice though. There's a lot of randomness here and a lot of fun stories that come along with the gameplay and where else can you see everyone mess up "Survive The Internet" EVERY TIME?!?! We're thinking about making this a regular thing, perhaps final Tuesday of the month or something, so let us know if that's something you'd be interested in seeing. Anyway, this is big departure for UPZ but change is good and this was one of our most active episodes so one can't exactly complain! September 14, 2021 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Description: Ultra Podcast Z celebrates its Fourth Anniversary in a rather low-key way, but we missed the chance of making the Fast Food Tier List Redux the anniversary so it is what it is! That said this was a fun episode where we decided to add two segments that were basically "borrowed" from the Cinemassacre Podcast: "What Are We Watching" and "Viewer Q&A". The first one lead us into some deviations as Nyaru talked more about ER but then talked about HannahTheHorrible and her recent video on the "Evilstick". Manuel talked "Baccano" which was recently watched and there was something of a main topic discussion that eventually lead into the Q&A part though since we didn't have any of them active, we just looked up some from a list online. That said if you have any questions you want us to answer, from any topic, then be sure to toss them into the comments below! Anyway, the main topic regarding our Anniversary was a bit more focused though we ran the gamut of reminiscing of the podcast's changes, its ups and downs, the fact that it's nearly as old as A-to-J itself, and how much older we all are. All that mildly depressing stuff aside we tossed around some ideas for future episodes that we plan to implement so please stay tuned for more UPZ (possibly rebranded!) goodness in the future! August 31, 2021 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Description: Ultra Podcast Z gets something of a new look on this episode and we're all for it! The thumbnail is a bit of a lie but we plan on changing those starting at 150 and might retroactively do that later.... BUT internet challenges! (Oh yeah, we also ditched the "Knuckles" in the branding) This was a fun topic that we kind of breezed through in spite of it being something that we brought to the topic table really last minute. The trick with UPZ is picking a topic that will hopefully retain relevancy until the show actually happens which we tried to do here but the whole "milk crate challenge" trend had run its course (rightfully so) by the time we tackled it. That wasn't too important though as apparently Nyaru and JD were not familiar with it as it was mainly a TikTok thing so we had a lot more time to fill talking about other "challenges" like the ice bucket challenge, the Harlem Shake, and more. A lot can be said as to what MAKES something a challenge on the internet and perhaps that's a topic we'll tackle another day, what also needed tackling this show was Nyaru, who was present and lively but had some tech issues throughout. August 24, 2021 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Badman Description: Ultra Podcast Z continues our string of episodes and this one is one of those "lucky" ones that would've probably been cancelled in an alternate universe as it originally was going to just be a Manuel & Nyaru episode but Warren had such strong opinions on the topic (which was "overrated anime", specifically he cared about Evangelion) that we decided to have him on. About an hour before the show though Nyaru had to dip out due to illness so we went on as a last-minute accidental duo. This made the show a lot more random as there were a couple segments that required Nyaru's presence but we soldiered on and the show was quite fun and had some of the new elements we've been trying to incorporate for a while now, such as on-screen chat. Besides a long rant about Evangelion, mostly from Warren, there was a lot of stuff here such as Manuel going on a bit too much on the failings of English dubs, thoughts on the first looks at both Netflix's "Cowboy Bebop" and "Spiderman: No Way Home", and a lot of other random topics. A very loose show, but a fun one that continues our streak and we can't wait to get back on track when Nyaru returns next week! August 17, 2021 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Janette Photaku Badman Description: Ultra Podcast Z goes back to that old standby that has gotten us through a weeks where we couldn't be bothered to come up with a proper topic: Tier Lists! We actually decided to do a Fast Food Tier List Redux (the original was about two years ago in the pre-Nyaru days) because Nyaru had done one recently and it was one of our first tier lists that could easily see different results with different co-hosts. Speaking of different co-hosts we had them this time around! Nyaru wasn't around, another reason for the tier list btw, but replacing her was Janette (who hasn't been on since around the start of the pandemic), Josh AKA "Photaku" (who is a first timer but an old friend), and Warren AKA "Badman" (who was actually SORT OF a replacement for Nestor who was supposed to be on). There's not too much to say in terms of lead up to this one except that there was a lot more arguing this time, a lot more restaurants, and we had JD, our mod, breaking up ties and making some executive decisions here and there along the way. Also, we speed up about a third of the way in, but this is the norm in these kind of shows as we always underestimate how much we have to say about each tier list item. August 10, 2021 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Badman (Last Section) Description: Ultra Podcast Z continues a revival with a "gross" episode! This is Episode 144 and for those that don't know, a dozen dozens is called a "gross" so we ran with that last minute even though it was kind of a last minute topic shift. We actually had more "things that are gross" topics but pretty much did all storytime type things with us only covering the Crunchyroll x Sony buyout in the middle. We also touched on "High Guardian Spice" and we were going to talk a bit about "gross fandoms" but were sorta stopped before we got there. That and the Steak-ummm thing we awkward, as was the porn talk at the beginning, but that's what y'all come here for right? Gross stuff is gross and we talked a lot about Taco Bell giving you the shits, cleaning up poop in retail settings, and some of the grossest things we've done/been involved in. Speaking of that latter part, Warren joined us crazy randomly after about the hour mark as he wanted to share stories and he's in the chat where we run the show so BAM, last minute third host. We've been surviving as a duo for the past few weeks (mainly trying to rebuild the core of the show) but it was fun having a guest for the first time in ages. August 3, 2021 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Description: Ultra Podcast Z continues its attempt at revival with another "Shooting The Shit" style episode! This one was about television and was centered around the theme of being young, during the summer, and just having a TV as a friend and watching all sorts of nonsense, so we took that idea and ran with it! This could've easily have been a very thin episode in terms of content but we had a surprising amount of things to talk about and we only went off-topic a few times. We started with some "comfort" shows but only really covered Nyaru's with ER, but we quickly moved into children's shows and cartoons we loved in our youth. It was interesting how similar, and different, both Nyaru and Manuel's experiences with children's TV was and it was even more interesting how many times they still managed to bring up porn and other adult content that is more fitting for the F.A. Podcast. We had a lot of fun going over talk shows too, and honestly that could've been an entire topic for a podcast in and of itself. (There's an idea!) We somehow managed to bring up feet, feet fetishes, and foot drawing nonsense as we were closing out and yeah, another awesome episode wrapped! July 27, 2021 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Description: Ultra Podcast Z continues its attempt at revival with a "Shooting The Shit" style episode where we only had the vaguest idea of what we were going to talk about going into this one and relied on being able to riff on topics we picked out of thin air. It was a little shaky at times but we think we pulled it off! We were going to talk almost solely on TTRPGs (thing "Dungeons & Dragons" and the like) but we filled the first 30+ mins with a lot of randomness like a deep talk on "Perfect Blue" and yet MORE talk on "2 Girls 1 Cup", the latter meaning that we have now covered that on every single A-to-J live show. When we finally got around to talking TTRPGs we mainly talked about D&D and "Vampire: The Masquerade", the latter of which Nyaru plays with other VTubers and she actually whipped out the model of her VTM character for us a bit! This topic was a lot of fun and maybe we should've relied more heavily on it as opposed to that intro, but that just adds to the random aspect of what UPZ has turned into recently. There's a lot of fun to be had here and hopefully you'll all watch our various TTRPG nonsense with Nyaru's VTM streams and A-to-J's "Drink Talk Roll" D&D streams! We also learned randomly that Nyaru never turns off her Nintendo Switch so be sure to roast her about that! July 20, 2021 6:00 PM PDT Hosts: Manuel Nyaru Description: Ultra Podcast Z has some interesting issues on this one when it came to recording. It's come to our attention that the recorded version suffers from a REALLY bad framerate and we plan to fix that immediately for the next episode. Elsewhere, we forgot to hit record on this one so we went with the backup source for it, but it was a rather fun episode where we were all on point, something that has been happening more and more lately tbh! A-to-J has a complicated set of "anniversaries" but for the sake of brevity all you need to know is that the "first" one is on July 22 and this episode was a sort of look back at those seven years. We've done this sort of thing many times before but this time it was with a focus on other outlets that were around at our start, have collaborated with us in the past, and where they are now. It's sad that the vast majority of them are no longer around as we had a lot of friends drop out of the scene because of it. We also talked about other sites we used to like that are now gone and basically how the internet is a very different place than it was seven years ago. Elsewhere we talked about the Steam Deck, Beastars, anime musicals, and the whole Oyamada Keigo/Cornelius Olympics scandal that's been going on. So please bear with the shaky video on this one (and on recent ones in general) and we promise to get that fixed in the future!
