July 26th saw the release of Xaa-Xaa’s latest single, Maru to Batsu. With the concept exploring what one considers to be correct or incorrect, whether it be the consequences of actions or words, we dive into another one of the band’s gloomy yet captivating perspectives on life. The title track, Maru to Batsu, takes on a somber style that is accompanied by vocalist Kazuki’s pleasantly resonant voice. The music video for the song features the band members performing in a dim-lighted room, wearing black and white costumes decorated with circles and x’s that symbolize “right” and “wrong”. Silver bubbles float around the members to visually capture the theme of the song, making for a simple yet satisfying tune.
The second track, Kuroi Neko-Chan, follows in a different direction, beginning with an aggressive echoing of guitar chords. The intro then blends with bassist Reiya’s booming string-strumming to create a vigorous vibe throughout the song. What makes the tune all the more amusing is Kazuki’s impression of a cat, as he meows several times in the song. Featured on the B-type single, the third track, Toumei Ningen, has a rather generic sound to it. However, the band have composed the song in a way that does not sound repetitive. Surprisingly, it contrasts with their well-known themes of distress and despair as powerful guitar solos and soulful drumming leave listeners with a feeling that is relaxed and hopeful.
