Sally 22/7’s English Speaking Seiyuu: Amagi Sally

22/7 (Nanabun no Nijuuni), is a voice actor idol group produced by AKB48 Group and Nogizaka46 Series producer Akimoto Yasushi alongside Aniplex and Sony Music Records. Out of 10,325 applications, 8 girls were selected for this very special project aimed at producing “dimension-crossing” idols. Top of the line talent can only be expected with a project that wants to create “idols that cross dimensions.” One member that truly fits the bill is Amagi Sally.

Amagi Sally, voice of Fujima Sakura, has a very special characteristic not found very often in the seiyuu or idol scene. However, first we need to take a trip to Showroom.

Live streaming mobile app and website, Showroom has become a hit amongst idols and other Japanese talents (with even a few non-professionals too).  Showroom allows for viewers to send stars (free gifts) and paid gifts to whoever’s “room” they are in and comment openly for the streamer to read.
One morning, I happened to be scrolling through the ongoing live streams on Showroom and stumbled across a few 22/7 members. The room that caught my eye was Sally’s.

Right off the bat she was energetic and engaging. There weren’t very many people in her room (around 300) which allowed her to read and respond to almost every comment that came her way. I decided to test the waters and send a simple message to her telling her I was from America. Immediately she responded-something I wasn’t used to from visiting AKB48 member 2,000+ viewer showrooms!

Not only did she respond in Japanese, but in English too! She had my full attention now. The comments exploded with English and Japanese speakers alike asking for her to speak more English. She spoke in slang and used terms such as “girl” and “like” when speaking. She explained she only knew casual and “slang” English, but I was thoroughly impressed nonetheless. Even though the stream ended all too soon, the next time was even better.

The next morning came and I was ready on Showroom the moment Sally went live. I read the topic she had posted at the topic of her stream: “English anime songs karaoke.” Sally sang anime songs to her hearts contents from Angel Beats to Evangelion all in clear English. She was truly the entertainer!
