Anime distributor AnimEigo, and parent company MediaOCD, have announced the debut of Episode 3 of The Anime Business, a first-of-its-kind documentary series featuring interviews with a variety of pioneers of the Western anime industry. The newest segment of the ongoing series features Pater Tatara, an entrepreneur who launched Anime NYC and helped to build the annual event into North America’s second biggest anime convention. All episodes of The Anime Business will be available in English. Japanese subtitles will also be available via a special grant from the Kleckner Foundation. Additional episodes and interviews are in production now.

Episodes 1 and 2 of The Anime Business are also now available to stream on the AnimEigo YouTube channel. Episode 1 features an interview with John O’Donnell, former Managing Director of Central Park Media. Episode 2 features an interview with Robert Napton, the former Director of Marketing and Producer of US Renditions and Managing Editor at Bandai Entertainment.

The Anime Business is an ongoing series featuring a wide range of entrepreneurs and visionaries that helped to pioneer and shape the North American anime industry. It is produced and hosted by industry veteran and MediaOCD founder and AnimEigo CEO Justin Sevakis.

Sevakis was the original founder of Anime News Network in 1998, and he contributed many of the site’s most popular columns for many years, in addition to co-hosting ANNCast, the #1 anime podcast worldwide, from 2009-2015. The lushly animated series from the celebrated director Osamu Dezaki features 51 episodes that are presented in 3-D and in High Definition for the first time.

An Epic Tale of Turbulence and Triumph
Remi was once a happy little boy, living with his mom and pet cow in the French countryside. But that joyous childhood comes to a screeching halt when daddy comes home, tells him he's adopted, and sells him to a street performer. Suddenly forced to accompany the gruff Vitalis, his dogs and his monkey as they wander on foot all over the country, Remi thinks that life can't possibly get worse. But he is VERY wrong.

3-D Anime via the Pulfrich Effect
Unlike most 3-D techniques, which require a near-duplicate frame for each eye, Remi utilizes the Pulfrich Effect: a false sense of depth a viewer can feel from objects that move horizontally. This is due to timing differences in how the visual cortex of the human brain processes input from each eye. Some people can notice this illusion on their own, but dimming one eye will further delay its signal, which greatly enhances the effect. The benefits of using this technique on television are that it requires no special equipment at any point: it’s compatible with virtually any film or video standard or medium.

Without the enhancing effect of 3-D glasses, the broadcast just looks “normal.” Moreover, if an object isn’t moving sideways, it doesn’t appear to be in 3-D at all. (The exhausting effort of adding lateral movement to EVERY SHOT meant that the effect is curtailed in later episodes.)

This technique has been used occasionally in broadcast television over the years, including special episodes of Doctor Who, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Yo! Yogi, and the Super Bowl XXIII Halftime Show in 1989. It’s also been used on home video with Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue, and in video games such as the Super NES title Jim Power: The Lost Dimension in 3-D.

Anime distributor AnimEigo, and parent company MediaOCD, recently released Episode 2 of The Anime Business, a first-of-its-kind documentary series featuring interviews with a variety of pioneers of the Western anime industry. This latest installment of the ongoing series features Robert Napton, the former Director of Marketing and Producer of US Renditions and Managing Editor at Bandai Entertainment. As anime has grown from modest beginnings into a multi-billion-dollar global industry, The Anime Business provides insights from many notable people that played important roles in helping to popularize the genre in North America at various stages of its evolution.

In the latest installment, Robert Napton recalls his days at U.S. Renditions, which was the Special Projects Division of Books Nippan (the American branch of Nippon Shuppan Hanbai) and one of the pioneers of anime home video distribution in North America. Napton reminiscences about titles such as Gunbuster, Eureka Seven, Appleseed, Black Magic M-66, Dangaio The Complete Series, and Outlanders as well as his tenure at Bandai Entertainment and releases such as Lucky Star and more.

The Anime Business Episode 1 is also now available to stream on the AnimEigo YouTube channel and features an interview with John O’Donnell, former Managing Director of Central Park Media. All episodes will be available in English. Japanese subtitles will also be available via a special grant from the Kleckner Foundation. Additional episodes and interviews are in production now.

The Anime Business is an ongoing series featuring a wide range of entrepreneurs and visionaries that helped to pioneer and shape the North American anime industry. It is produced and hosted by industry veteran and MediaOCD founder and AnimEigo CEO Justin Sevakis.
