Nekopara OVA Review

On December 21, 2017, NEKO WORKs hit their catgirl-loving fanbase with the much-anticipated Nekopara OVA and it's time we took a look at it!

​The OVA received positive reviews, and many fans even hoped for releases of more episodes, so when the bossman here at A-to-J requested that I do this review, I was excited. I hoped that this assignment would pull me back into the wonderful world of anime, as I hadn’t been involved in any series for quite a long time now. In the end, however, I feel as if it had the opposite result. 

Perhaps it is my lack of care for catgirls, or my lack of exposure for the original series, but this OVA was not for me. It was a generic, overdone show, and it didn't have any elements interesting enough to have it stand apart from other shows. The plot is simple: two catgirls are infatuated with their master and they go on fun little adventures as they explore and learn about the human world. Sounds cute and fun, but this is literally all that happens. There was no plot anywhere to speak of except to fit in scenes of the catgirls doing cute things like enjoying being petted, getting worried for their master when he was sick, and other things that are in nearly every other anime out there. In these cases the interesting parts would be the fun little adventures, right? I sure didn’t think so. Everything I saw happen in this already happened a thousand times in other animes and it was often done better.

Perhaps I am missing the point, and I must be, because I still see nothing special about this. However, if you are a fan of the Nekopara series or are interested in catgirls, this anime may be for you. If you are an outside audience of the series like me, perhaps check out the visual novel series first. Other than the lack of anything interesting, the animation was nice so it wasn’t all bad. Overall this OVA wasn’t for me. Perhaps it is for you, but definitely not for me.

-Well done animation and voice acting.
-There are a lot of cute catgirls in cute outfits.

Cons: 
-Anticlimactic, generic, predictable, and unoriginal.
-No overall plot to follow.
