The 12th episode of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury has just aired, ending the cour with several hard-hitting cliffhangers and a bloody post-credits scene that has the whole fandom buzzing. Animation studio Sunrise, however, has announced that episode 12 is no longer the end of the first cour of the show's first season; it is the end of the season proper. The previously-announced second cour, meant to air in April, will now be considered the show's second season, and is assumed to be the end of the run for The Witch From Mercury. The Witch From Mercury, the latest mainline entry from the historic franchise, was announced as a 24-episode series from the beginning, so this information isn't entirely new. But the show's audience, especially long-term Gundam fans, were holding out hope for a proper second season of 24 or 25 episodes, bringing the series closer to the 50 episode standard the franchise has set in the past. This isn't to say there's no chance that there won't be a third or fourth season, though, but it seems unlikely at the moment. More pressing for viewers right now is probably the gut punch episode 12 delivered, and the three month gap between now and the continuation of Suletta Mercury's increasingly more traumatic adventures. The good news is that the show will return in the same time slot, meaning viewers haven't seen their last Suletta Sunday just yet, and Sunrise will fill the time slot with TV editions of feature-length Gundam properties in the meantime, including the recent Hathaway's Flash. |
