Symphonic black metal collective Vampillia have had a busy couple of years. Together with their sister group Violent Magic Orchestra (VMO), the band has been touring Japan and the UK almost nonstop. They released the excellent Happiness Brought by Endless Sorrow EP last year, along with a tease that an album would be coming along soon. Today, Vampillia released two new singles via Virgin Babylon Records, both featuring avant-garde pop vocalist Hatis Noit. The first song is "into the black blue", a hauntingly beautiful slow burn with a massive crescendo at the end. The second song, "fenghuang", is a more stripped-back piece featuring little more than just piano and Hatis Noit's reverb-laden voice. Neither of these songs is Vampillia's typically blistering black metal fare, but both are masterfully composed and absolutely worth a listen. Both songs were mixed by World's End Girlfriend, "into the black blue" was mastered by Tim Hecker and "fenghuang" was mastered by James Plotkin. Vampillia is kicking off another UK tour with VMO this Saturday at the sold out Brutal Assault festival in the Czech Republic. They will be joined by Neige of French black metal project Alcest during the French leg of the tour. - Rose |
