In the midst of the hype for Anime Expo 2019, many were thrilled for the independent J-Pop experience set to take place the day before: OTAQUEST LIVE! Some of the biggest names in J-Pop took to the stage for this music event hosted and curated by m-flo’s one and only Taku Takahashi. Alongside m-flo’s return to Los Angeles, we were treated to a lineup that consisted of Crazyboy, Hiroomi Tosaka, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, and CAPSULE. The night was filled with a great energy from an ensemble of diverse and notable artist ready to let the Los Angeles crowd have a taste of Japanese pop. The concert kicked off with the one and only hip-hop artist Crazyboy presented with four backup dancers, the artists presented an extremely high energy performance for Otaquest’s audience playing his most popular songs including "LOCO" and "Double Play". Sadly Crazyboy’s set was the shortest out of the five artists with a total of four songs. Hiroomi Tosaka was presented at the second artist to the already hyped audience. Tosaka was also backed up by several dancers in leather jacket apparel with crazy energetic dances. The artist also surprised the audience with a collaboration performance with Crazyboy, as they performed their hit song, "LUXE", to close out his set. The third act included a kawaii, familiar face to Los Angeles with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. Clad in a fluffy pink ensemble, Kyary took to the stage, opening with "Ninja Re Bang Bang" dancing along with her funky, kawaii dancers. Her set included "Fashion Monster" and "CANDY CANDY", but she also treated us to her latest released song "Kimiga Ii ne Kuretara". To wrap things up, she closed her set with great applause as she performed her hit song "PONPONPON" and danced with the crowd. After Kyary, we had the electronic duo that consisted of Kyary’s own producer Yasutaka Nakata and Toshiko Koshijima take the stage as CAPSULE. Yasutaka took to his DJ set as Toshiko danced with the crowd opening with "MORE! MORE! MORE!". Toshiko danced at the front of the stage as the went on to play "JUMPER" and then excite the crowd even high as "Hero" started. To end the night, Taku Takahashi finally came out with Verbal and Lisa to perform as m-flo. Lisa provided her backup vocals as Verbal emceed and DJ Taku took to his set. The crowd was treated to new songs from their latest E.P. "Mortal Portal", but they also were given a special preview to songs that m-flo were still working on (which also included the chance to name one of the songs by commenting on their social media). All three of the members energetically interacted with the crowd. At the end of the night DJ Taku came out to thank everyone or coming out for the night and was joined by Crazy boy, as he was more than happy to let the crowd know that he “loves LA”.
Here's hoping that we see more from OTAQUEST in the future! -Paloma For More Information: https://live.otaquest.com/ |
