As a music fan, I'm always on the lookout for up-and-coming bands. It can be a bit tough for an English-speaking fan of Japanese music to discover Japanese bands before they make it big, but once in a while the stars align and somebody crawls their way out of the fog. Mississippi Khaki Haze is one of those bands.
Rising from the ashes of Osaka band Whisper Voice Riot, who disbanded in January, Mississippi Khaki Haze has only released a few demo songs thus far. They're a fledgling band at the beginning of their career, but they've got some serious potential. Calling themselves "THE GREATEST BAND IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE" might be a bit of a reach for now, but they've only just started. Who knows just how far they'll go?
My introduction to this group came from their song "True Love", a post-punk piece which could easily be mistaken for an early demo by "Primary Colors"-era Horrors.
"Phone Call" was the first song they shared, and it burns with the urgency of Joy Division.
Their most recent demo is for the song "Silence Like A Shout", and this is pure post-punk revival. The band wears their influences on their sleeves, very clearly taking cues from The Horrors or even The Strokes. The mixing is way off, but the intent is clear and I can't help but dance along.
I can't wait to hear a studio recording from this band. The songwriting and technical skills are there, it's just a bit rough around the edges. I'll follow them closely for sure, and I recommend that any post-punk fans do the same!
