On Tuesday night, beloved indie rockers Kinoko Teikoku dropped a surprise digital single on iTunes, "Cry Baby". It's one song without a b-side, physical release, or even any context. I imagine it will be included on the band's next full-length album, whenever that might be. The release of "Cry Baby" follows the news that Kinoko Teikoku will be composing and performing "The Future of Love" as the theme song to the upcoming film "Burning Love Enough to Boil Water". "Cry Baby" itself is a gorgeous ballad, as Kinoko Teikoku songs often are. Sato's vocals are as perfect as always, layered atop a calming wave of shimmering guitars. The chorus builds into a heavier wall of thick instrumentation in true post-shoegaze fashion. As is usually the case with this band, the melody isn't immediately attention-grabbing or catchy, but the song definitely grows on you. It's another beautiful entry into an already wonderful discography. Unfortunately no video exists as of yet to share (aside from the teaser embedded below), but the song can be purchased/previewed on iTunes Japan. -Justin Kinoko Teikoku is...Chiaki Sato (vocals, guitar) A-chan (guitar) Shigeaki Taniguchi (bass) Kon Nishimura (drums) WEBSITE |
