After a three-year break, Her Ghost Friend is back with their fourth full-length album. On this latest album, the duo of Shinobu Ono and DJ Obake are picking up right where they left off on 2013's Chungking Express, never-ending story. This album is a beautiful exercise in gentle lullabies. Ono's cute and dreamy vocals are in perfect harmony with the ethereal production. At times it feels like the most chilled-out idol pop, or like Suiyoubi no Campanella composing the soundtrack to a dream. Each song has this sense of nostalgia, with hazy melodies and minimalist beats. I love the progression on Twilight Tokyo, building up a wall of dreamy melody as it goes on. There's also the lovely lead single Matataki, which we recently took a look at in anticipation of the album. There's also an airy playfulness on the album, like on the bouncy title track or on Tabun Watashi ga Yureidattara, which had a video come out along with the album. While not every track stands out on first listen, there's something to love on each one if you give it a closer listen. On the tail-end of the album is one of my favorite songs, Everything, Everything. The melody is perfectly catchy on top of a lovely piece of dream pop. The album ends with an instrumental outro, Owari, which leaves you with a warm feeling and perfectly bookends the album along with the instrumental intro. Warm is a great way to describe the album overall, actually. Her Ghost Friend set out to make something cheery, lighthearted, and beautiful. It's one of the sweetest albums I've heard in years, and I love it! -Justin Her Ghost Friend is... |
