FEMM return with the cyberpunk-tinged double-single "Neon Twilight / Countdown"

Everyone's favorite mannequins are back, as FEMM recently dropped two new singles (technically one double A-side single, but you know what I mean) and took the world by surprise. Far East Mention Mannequins, better known as FEMM, have been absolutely wrecking the pop market for a few years with explosive pop hits like "Fxxk Boyz Get Money" and "PoW!". These two new videos, "Neon Twilight" and "Countdown", mark a noticeable shift in tone for the electro-pop duo.

"Neon Twilight" opens up with a downright infectious refrain. The closer of the two songs to classic FEMM, "Neon Twilight" is still not quite what we're used to from this group. The song focuses more on an unforgettable chorus rather than FEMM's rap skills, and sounds a bit more like a straightforward pop song. I get a little bit of a cyberpunk night club vibe from the music video, which features the girls, er, mannequins in what look like giant puffy raincoats. I gotta say, this is one of FEMM's strongest moments. It's pure pop bliss, a repetitive but catchy dance number you won't soon forget.

The other single is "Countdown", which took me by surprise (just as "L.C.S." did on their previous double-single). "Countdown" is a fairly downtempo piece of bassy and jazz-inspired hip hop. On first listen I was pretty bored by it, but it definitely grows on you. If the last video was 'a little' cyberpunk, this one turns it up to 11. The color scheme is fantastic and there's a retro/80s vibe going on, not to mention the aspect ratio of the video itself. I still don't enjoy it quite as much as "Neon Twilight", but I definitely recommend giving it a chance if you don't like it after the first couple listens.

FEMM has shown time and time again that they're a force to be reckoned with in the international pop scene, and this couple of singles just further solidifies that point. I love that they took a darker turn with "Countdown", and I'm definitely looking forward to the next time they're ready to drop their next full-length album.
