In a rather shocking move for a song that is 35 years old, Warner Music Japan recently uploaded a short MV for Mariya Takeuchi's 1984 song (that reached viral status last year) "Plastic Love" to their YouTube channel. For those that don't know "Plastic Love" is a song off the 1984 album "VARIETY", and achieved quite a bit of fame online both by its viral placement in the YouTube algorithm, and the saga that stemmed from the original video's takedown on the grounds of copyright, though not for the song itself. (For more on that you can check out these two videos by Whang! [1] [2]) The album "VARIETY" would eventually top the Oricon album charts and a single version would drop the following years. The song's recent viral nature introduced millions of people the world over to the sound of "city pop" and this new video, directed by Kyotaro Hayashi, arrives mere days after the original viral upload was reinstated to YouTube. One can only wonder if this video will extend the popularity of the song further still. -Manuel The MV can be seen below. |
