nano.RIPE is a two-member group made up of Kimiko (Guitar, Vocals), and Jun Sasaki (Guitar). They formed in 2004, and made their major debut in 2010. Though they have a wide body of music that crosses over into several styles and themes, they're probably best known to overseas fans by way of the theme songs that they've provided for anime like Hanasaku Iroha, The Devil Is A Part-Timer!, Non Non Biyori, Food Wars!, and Tensei Shite Inaka de Slow Life wo Okuritai, just to name a few. They recently released their latest full-length album, "Hikari wo Hakobumono", and are currently celebrating the 15th anniversary since their major debut. We recently had the opportunity sit down with nano.RIPE and discuss their formation, their music, that aforementioned new album, and their hopes for the future. Check it out, and then be sure to give their music a listen via the links at the end of the interview!
A-to-J: Hello and thank you for the interview! Can you tell us a bit about nano.RIPE's beginnings and formation?

nano.RIPE: In high school, the two of us-Kimiko and Jun Sasaki—met and formed the original band. At first, it was just something fun to do while we were students, but we enjoyed it so much that we kept going after graduation. The band has continued ever since, through several member changes.

A-to-J: You recently released your latest full-length album, "Hikari wo Hakobumono", after a bit of a break in releases. Can you tell us a bit how this album came together?

nano.RIPE: During the two and a half years since our last album, we continued making songs and releasing singles. This album consists of 10 tracks carefully selected from songs we created in that period, older pieces, and brand-new ones written specifically for this release. We believe we’ve put together a really strong album this time.

A-to-J: 2025 marks the nano.RIPE's official 15th anniversary. How would you say the group has changed or evolved over that period?

nano.RIPE: Although we’ve gone through several member changes, I’m really glad we’ve been able to keep going without stopping. When the members change, the sound naturally changes too, but that’s why we’ve made a point of clearly deciding which parts should change and which should stay the same. By focusing on creating music that stays true to nano.RIPE, I feel we’ve been able to grow.

A-to-J: What is your songwriting process like, and which songs would you recommend to someone who is new to your music?

nano.RIPE: Recently, Jun Sasaki has been spending a lot of time working on melodies and arrangements on a computer, but he always makes sure not to stray from the “band sound”. When it comes to lyrics, I’ve never struggled and usually write them all at once, driven by impulse. If you’re hearing us for the first time, I’d like you to experience the current nano.RIPE sound through our latest album, "Hikari wo Hakobumono".

A-to-J: Though you're probably best known in the West for your work on various anime, you also put out far more music not tied to the anime industry. What are some of the differences that come from writing songs that are to be used for tie-up purposes?

nano.RIPE: There’s no major difference in how we compose the songs. For the lyrics, the biggest difference is the theme, but we make sure to include our own feelings, so it doesn’t become something that’s made for the anime alone.

A-to-J: You've held several overseas concerts over the years, but haven’t returned to the US in a while. Do you hope that you can come back soon one day? Are there any other places you'd like to tour that you haven't yet?

nano.RIPE: Our first overseas performance was in Boston, so it’s a memory that really stands out. We'd love to go back, and since there are so many other fascinating cities in the US, we hope to visit as many as we can!

A-to-J: Where do you see nano.RIPE going in the next 15 years? Do you have any longterm goals in mind for the group and your music?
A-to-J: nano.RIPE

nano.RIPE: Our goal remains to make each live show better than the last, and we want to be a band that can stay on stage for as long as possible. We don’t have any grand ambitions, but we want to keep making songs that reach as many people as possible and that they can enjoy for a long time.

A-to-J: Lastly, is there any message you’d like to give your fans, especially those overseas?

nano.RIPE: Whether you discovered nano.RIPE through our anime songs or found us through other tracks, I look forward to the day we can all sing together! Of course, we’d like to go and see you, but please be sure to visit Japan as well!

We're very grateful to nano.RIPE for taking the time to answer our questions, and you for checking it out! Be sure to check out their music, as well as all their social media, both linked below!
