PIXY is a South Korean girl group who debuted in 2021 with the song "Wings". Their style combines pop, hip hop, and EDM into a sound that also incorporates intense, and breathtaking, choreography. All this, along with the imagery in their MVs, has captivated fans the world over (who are referred to as "WINXY") and they've held several overseas performances, including a recent European tour and several US appearances. Supporting their new chapter with the EP "Reborn", and the single "Villain", they recently attended Anime Weekend Atlanta and we were lucky enough to interview them! We discussed their formation, inspirations, fan interactions, and more. If you're already a fan of PIXY, or even if you're completely new to them and their music, you're going to want to check out the interview below and give PIXY's music a listen along the way too! A-to-J: Thank you for the interview! Can you please give us an introduction and tell us a little about yourselves? Rinji: Hi, I’m Rinji. I’m the new member of PIXY and the youngest. Thank you. Daejong: Hi, I’m best smile, Daejong! Nice to meet you. Sua: Hi, I’m Sua. Lola: Hi, I’m PIXY’s main rapper, Lola. A-to-J: For those unfamiliar with PIXY, can you tell us a bit about your sound and style? Daejong: I think we’re actually famous for our unique worldview. Everything, our music style and lyrics, comes from our worldview and the lore we’ve created. In our worldview, we have good and evil separated on each side, endlessly fighting and seducing each other, trying to win over the other. The conflict will seem dire and endless. However, in the end, good will prevail and hopefully, we’ll have left a positive impact in our world. We hope that you will feel this through our music. A-to-J: Can you tell us about PIXY’s formation? Daejong: All of the members love singing and dancing. We all dreamed of being idol stars one day. We each pursued our dreams on our own and one day, we all happened to be called into AllArt Entertainment and became PIXY. A-to-J: What were some of the members' music backgrounds before PIXY? Sua: Lola and I actually went to the same music academy. We would sometimes go out and busk in the streets and do cover performances. Rinji: Daejong and I went to the same academy where we learned the basics of singing and dancing. A-to-J: You released an EP titled "Reborn" earlier this year, can you tell us a bit about it? Perhaps your favorite songs? Lola: For “Reborn”, we had many things we wanted to convey, many messages. In terms of music style and genre, we wanted to switch it up a little bit to make it more trendy and catchy. We wanted this album to sound more contemporary and exciting.
A-to-J: How would you say PIXY’s music has evolved since your debut? Sua: When we first debuted, we wanted to make an impact and leave a powerful impression, so we focused a lot more on the dark fantasy concept. As we went on, our sound softened and became easier to enjoy for a wider audience. We want to show our versatility and go for different sounds. A-to-J: If you could recommend a song that people new to PIXY check out first, which would it be and why? Lola: Personally, I would recommend “Wings”, our debut song. It is our first song and it feels like a strong introduction for each of our members. It also introduces PIXY’s worldview and lore so I recommend this for the first listen. Sua: I want to introduce new listeners to “Bewitched”. It’s a unique song by itself, but if you look at the music video together, the choreography is very technical and really tough. It’s different from what’s out there so I highly recommend it as the first song. Daejong: I recommend “Villain”. It’s the start of a new chapter for PIXY, kind of a rebirth. From here on out there will be many more stories to be told and as we head into this new direction, I would like for newcomers to have a listen and follow along with us on our journey. Rinji: I recommend “Addicted.” Personally, I like this type of music. Both the song and the performance go very hard with an intense beat and energy. If you were to listen to this song first, I feel it would have the strongest impact and leave a lasting impression.
A-to-J: What are some of your musical inspirations or favorite personal artists?
Lola: Among K-Pop idols, personal inspiration is Sohyun. Suwa: I look up to Girls’ Generation. Daejong: Arianna Grande. I love how she performs so confidently on stage and how she loves and interacts with her fans. I want to be like her. Rinji: I am really inspired by BLACKPINK and Bibi. A-to-J: Since we're currently at an anime convention, what is your favorite anime, or do you have a favorite character?? Dajeong: Kagome from Inuyasha! Rinji: I forgot the name of the character just now, but I really like the younger sister character in Jujutsu Kaisen. Sua and Lola: One Piece! A-to-J: What are some of your hobbies that you like to indulge in in your free time? Sua: I love taking walks and listening to music by myself. Daejong: I like riding bicycles. Lola: I usually enjoy watching movies by myself but nowadays, one of my goals is to learn how to drive. Rinji: I like to watch movie reviews, and read different types of novels. A-to-J: PIXY has held several overseas performances; do you find it difficult to perform for new fans in an unfamiliar setting? Sua: I can’t say we faced too many hardships on our international tours. I’ve just been very thankful to be able to experience this and be able to travel and meet our fans from all over the world. We’ve learned a lot and we are grateful. Daejong: Of course, it can sometimes be tiring due to our tough schedules. But, when we are with our fans at those venues, their energy recharges and revitalizes us. A-to-J: Are there any places that you haven’t had a chance to perform at that you’d like to perform someday? PIXY (In Unison): Coachella! A-to-J: Do you have any funny stories that you can share with us that occurred while performing? Daejong: There’s endless laughter when we are together. When we girls are together, even the smallest moments are so much fun and memorable, and we love it. Lola: During this tour, Rinji and I shared a room together for the first time so I didn’t really know her habits. when I woke her up for the first time, she flung her arms up and was like, “uhhh!” Rinji doesn’t remember a thing. Sua: Yesterday, there were a bunch of fans at our fan meeting and they liked to tease me. They pretended to be like other international fans and yelled “Hey, Sua!” I’d turn and wonder who was calling me that way. It happens often. A-to-J: What are some of your upcoming plans after AWA? Daejong: Right after the show, we’re going back to Korea and a couple days later, we’re heading to Japan for an event. After that, well, with our fans and Winxy in mind, we’re going to prepare very hard for our next comeback album. A-to-J: Where can people go to learn more about you? Lola: Of course, we have our official YouTube page. We also get to post and manage our social media pages ourselves, so hopefully you can follow us and get to know each one of us more through those channels. We post a lot of pictures just from our daily lives for our fans, especially on Instagram. A-to-J: Lastly, can you give a closing message to your fans? Sua: Dear Winxy. We recently wrapped up our European Tour and came across the ocean for AWA. We have Japan planned next and after that, next year will be even more exciting. We have a lot more to show, a lot more we want to share and give to you. Thank you so much for always being by our side, and for giving us the strength and energy to continue. We love you. We'd like to thank PIXY for the interview and we strongly encourage everyone to check out their music and social media via the links below.
