Guso Drop is out to prove they're more hardcore than BiSH (which unfortunately at this point isn't very hard to do...) and they're here with a new EP to drive that point home. The idols who famously encouraged more stage diving and audience lifting the same day BiSH banned those activities have returned with some seriously hard-hitting punk idol songs which might be the best they've put out so far. 'Yume shi' opens with a self-titled track. "Guso Drop" has a thick bass line heavily informed by hardcore punk, and some of the hardest-hitting power chords I've ever heard in an idol song. The song is only about a minute and a half long, solidifying it as the best hardcore punk song to come out all year! The next song is my favorite hands-down. "Hirari Hira Hira" has been Gudo Drop's best song since their debut, one they've released before but not in such high quality. The production is cleaned up (but not too clean, of course!) and there are a lot more intricacies in the mix. Specifically, the screams are louder and longer. Love it! "Hirari Hira Hira" also has the distinction of being incredibly catchy underneath all that punk fury. Unfortunately I can't find a video for the updated version, but here's the one Guso Drop released last year: "I do! I do!" is about as heavy as metal gets, with some chugging rhythm guitars and the harshest growling vocals this group has put out thus far. Guso Drop are easily the queens of idolcore as far as I'm concerned, and this song only serves to prove my point. This song is what "idol + metal" should be. Calling you out, BABYMETAL! The EP closes off with "No.18" which has some PassCode-esque digital distortion and an overall cyberpunk vibe. The chorus is strong, though this is probably the least hardcore song of the four. Still, when your least hardcore song sounds like this, you know you're doing something right. Overall, this is a really strong release from one of my favorite groups in the idolcore scene right now. I'm anticipating a full-length album within the year, but Guso Drop has been fairly slow with their releases thus far. Hopefully they're just getting things sorted out though, as they're fairly new and incredibly indie. I strongly urge everybody into punk or metal idols to give Guso Drop a chance, they have their eyes set on stealing the idolcore throne and they have a better shot at it than most! -Justin Guso Drop |
