TWICE fans (a.k.a. ‘Onces’) are once again finding themselves in a daze as the popular K-POP girl group has released two new music videos for their newest Japanese singles, “Breakthrough” and “HAPPY HAPPY”.
The two singles, announced two months ago as an unprecedented back-to-back release, have left fans abuzz as both videos—which were released within minutes of each other—have already surpassed 3 million views in less than 24 hours.

Check them out below!

“HAPPY HAPPY” is an upbeat power ballad centered on a theme of being happy and in love. The music video brings out summer-y/beach themes and lots of eye-popping color, with the girls making facial expressions that put their trademark cute and natural charm fully on display.

The surrounding scenes are lively, animated and filled with laughter and joy; in one scene, blushing clouds smile as candies rain from the sky while Tzuyu and Mina crouch under their umbrellas; in another scene, Momo and Jeongyeon play on a UFO machine to try and win the animated prizes, many of which are actually the colorful little “Lovelyz” that were featured in the music video for BDZ and represent the TWICE members.

“Breakthrough” is a catchy, stimulating hip hop song. The girls put on a continuous showcase of funky dance moves while wearing chic black outfits, alternated with similarly fancy white outfits.

Although the video opens with the same pair of doors seen at the beginning of “HAPPY HAPPY” and the same sets, the surroundings take a decidedly darker tone and more mature ambience. The song lyrics center around a powerful theme of breaking through one’s weaknesses and being yourself in the midst of peer pressure. We think that the overall sound and theme have resemblances to hip-hop style songs from groups such as E-Girls, Fairies, and Morning Musume.

Bubblegum K-POP with a Japanese Flavor

The three Japanese members of TWICE (Momo, Sana and Mina) are featured prominently in the new videos, alongside their fellow Korean and Taiwanese members (Jihyo, Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Chaeyoung and Dahyun are from Korea; Tzuyu is from Taiwan).

As the Japanese members comprise one-third of the group’s 9-member lineup, JYP Entertainment (TWICE’s Korean label and agency) has made a point to cater to Japanese fans by releasing original Japanese songs, on top of Japanese versions of their popular songs originally sung in Korean. Up until now, TWICE’s Japan label (Warner Music Japan) has released three Japanese original singles: “One More Time”, “Candy Pop” and “Wake Me Up”.

“HAPPY HAPPY” will be released in Japan on July 17th, 2019, and “Breakthrough” will follow one week later on July 24th, 2019. The new songs will respectively be their fourth and fifth Japanese original singles

More On TWICE

TWICE’s formation goes back to 2015 when the members competed in the competition survival TV show “Sixteen”. While the finalists were originally to become a 7-member group, JYP founder Park Jin-young announced that two additional members (Tzuyu, the “audience pick”; and Momo, who was added for her strong dance abilities) would become part of TWICE despite not ranking as finalists in the show.

Since then, TWICE has gone on to become one of the most widely recognized K-POP idol groups in history, regularly breaking records for YouTube views as well as all-time sales records for K-POP girl groups.

TWICE recently completed a sold-out Japan tour (Twice Dome Tour 2019 “#Dreamday”), with concerts in Osaka, Tokyo and Nagoya in March and April of this year. They are currently on a world tour (Twice World Tour 2019 “Twicelights”) in which they will be visiting cities around the world including Los Angeles, Mexico City, Chicago and New York.
