Acclaimed Japanese acts CIVILIAN and HARU NEMURI recently announced that they will reunite for a special co-headlining live performance titled “CIVILIAN × HARU NEMURI”. Details on this collaboration, and on the groups themselves, can be found below.
The “CIVILIAN × HARU NEMURI” live performance will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at TOKIO TOKYO in Shibuya. These artists last performed together in 2022 to a sold-out crowd, so there is plenty of reason to get excited for this show. Now, nearly three years later, they return to the same stage for a collaborative event that promises an unforgettable night of sound, energy, and emotion.

CIVILIAN, formerly known as Lyu:Lyu, is known for their work on Naruto Shippuden with the song “Never Change feat. Lyu:Lyu", and for Altair: A Record of Battles under their current name. Since going independent in 2022, the band has continued to push creative boundaries, exploring new sonic territory and captivating audiences with their evolution. HARU NEMURI, who also became independent earlier this year, has been rapidly gaining global attention for her genre-defying music and bold performances.

This highly anticipated event marks a rare and powerful meeting of two distinctive voices in Japan’s alternative music scene, delivering a one-night-only performance that fans won’t want to miss.

HARU NEMURI will be releasing her highly anticipated third full-length album titled, "ekkolaptómenos", scheduled for release on August 1, 2025. As she continues to expand her artistic boundaries, this latest release serves as another powerful statement of her uncompromising creativity and independent vision.

Additional information on both artists can be found below.

More on HARU NEMURI
HARU NEMURI has always made music for herself first, but now the world is listening—even if they don’t understand a word she sings, raps, and screams. Rooted in punk and riot grrrl ethos, her music is anthemic, frantic, and poetic, channeling fire as both destruction and renewal—like a phoenix reborn or the first blooms of spring. Drawing from influences like Fugazi, Björk, and Susumu Hirasawa, she fuses J-pop, rap, experimental, and hardcore into a fearless, genre-defying sound. Her critically acclaimed album SHUNKA RYOUGEN received an 8.0 rating from Pitchfork and was praised by The Fader and Paste Magazine as “a convincing balance of nihilism and hope.”

Her 2018 debut album Haru to Shura received global acclaim, ranking among the best on major U.S. music sites. During the pandemic, she performed at SXSW Online, Midem, and Live on KEXP. In 2022, she completed her first sold-out North American tour, appeared on Audiotree Live, and joined Pussy Riot’s SXSW set as a guest vocalist. Known for her mesmerizing performances, Haru commands the stage with untamed energy and surreal imagery, leaving audiences unable to look away. While going on another 30-city world tour, her Washington, D.C. show went viral when Fugazi’s Ian MacKaye attended, further cementing her reputation as a boundary-pushing force in modern music.

In 2023, she was selected for Spotify’s RADAR: Early Noise, performed at SUMMER SONIC, and released INSAINT, an all-band-recorded EP. She headlined tours across the U.K., Europe, and Thailand and was named to Forbes Japan's 30 Under 30.

In 2024, HARU NEMURI headlined tours in New Zealand, Australia, and the U.S. She also collaborated with New York duo Frost Children on the EP Soul Kiss and Thai artist Pyra on Don’t Make Love Vow. In 2025, she recently released naughty Al, exploring AI and femininity, continuing to push artistic and conceptual boundaries.

CIVILIAN Profile:
CIVILIAN is a Japanese rock band formed in 2008, originally known as Lyu:Lyu. The band consists of Hidekazu Koyama (Vocals, Guitar), Junichi Kato (Bass), and Kiyoyuki Arita (Drums). Known for their aggressive sound and deeply emotional lyrics, they gained early recognition with their 2010 mini-album 32:43, which earned them a spot in Oricon’s “Next Break Artists.”

In 2016, the band rebranded as CIVILIAN and had gone makor, releasing singles like “Bake no kawa” and “愛 / 憎” (Love / Hate). They’re also known for their contribution to anime, with “Never Change” (feat. Lyu:Lyu) being featured in Naruto Shippuden and “Kōdō” as the ending theme for Altair: A Record of Battles.

In 2022, CIVILIAN made the bold decision to go independent, continuing to push creative boundaries while evolving their sound. Their shift allowed them to explore new territories and connect more directly with their growing fanbase. In 2025, they’ll reunite with HARU NEMURI for a special live performance in Tokyo, marking another exciting chapter in their ongoing journey.

<![CDATA[Visual Kei Band Misui Release New Album: “Seimeisen”]]>Thu, 27 Mar 2025 07:00:00 GMThttp://a-to-jconnections.com/visual-kei-jrock/visual-kei-band-misui-release-new-album-seimeisen
Japanese Visual Kei band Misui recently released their second full-length album, titled “Seimeisen”, and we have all the latest to show you now. The latest MVs to support it, as well as links to check it out for yourself, can be found below!
Channeling pain, sadness, and despair, Misui presents a well-balanced album that creates a musically cathartic experience. “Seimeisen” features 11 tracks, including the promotional song “...Ah, Buzama”, as well as the singles released since their signing to PARAGUAS inc. in 2023: “Nennen Korori”, “Bye Bye Mahi”, “Ichibanboshi ni Negau Koto”, and “Aizuchi”. The album also includes a DVD compiling the music videos for the five aforementioned songs. A special bundle with the CD and a small towel is available for purchase worldwide through the official online store.

Ranging from dark piercing tones to impactful catchy melodies, Misui captures the vibe of old-school Visual Kei while remaining fresh and modern. This album promises a diverse range of styles that roar louder than their previous works.

The composers, guitarist Amane and drummer LANA, have this to say regarding the album:
"This second album, compared to our first one, “Shinibasho”, introduces even more powerful elements to showcase a different Misui. I composed these songs with the intention of having a sound that catches attention. The lead track “…Ah, Buzama” demonstrates how powerful Misui has become since our early days. It also includes some previously released songs. The tracklist order was carefully arranged, creating an amazing flow, so it all comes together as one complete work. Please make sure to listen to the tracks from the first song to the last, in order."
— Guitarist Amane

"The image I had in my mind was delivered by the five of us and it turned into two amazing tracks. Rather than just integrating a specific scene, melody line, or creating a catchy song, I was able to produce tracks that express the essence of Misui, as well as my own style."
— Drummer LANA

Misui continues to expand across more areas of Japan, building a growing fanbase through their intense performances and heart-wrenching music.

<![CDATA[Survive Said The Prophet Releases First Single In Nearly Two Years: "State Of Mind"]]>Wed, 26 Mar 2025 16:55:27 GMThttp://a-to-jconnections.com/visual-kei-jrock/survive-said-the-prophet-releases-first-single-in-nearly-two-years-state-of-mind
Fans of Survive Said The Prophet have had a long wait for new music, but that drought is finally at an end. It's taken the better part of two years, but the Tokyo-based, emotionally charged rockers are back with a new single. That single, “State Of Mind", is now available across all streaming platforms, and it's a song that is well worth the wait. Details on this release, as well as links to check it out for yourself, can be found below.
This new single marks their first release since 2023’s single "Paradox", the theme song for the critically acclaimed anime Vinland Saga Season 2. Known for seamlessly blending post-hardcore, electronica, and emotional lyricism, Survive Said The Prophet continues to break boundaries, delivering a sound that resonates globally.

"State Of Mind" is an anthem for anyone navigating the complexities of daily life and inner conflict. Through this track, Survive Said The Prophet invites listeners to connect on a deeper level, fusing an electronica-laced intro, Yosh’s signature emotive vocals, and their hard-hitting band sound—creating a sonic embodiment of the band’s current mindset. The single is further elevated by the involvement of Matt Good, guitarist of the iconic post-hardcore band From First To Last—best known for shaping the 2000s post-hardcore scene and launching the career of Skrillex (Sonny Moore)—who co-produced and features on the track, adding an even more dynamic edge to the production.

The bands front-man YOSH states: "State of Mind" is a song we needed—not just musically, but as a way to reflect on our past to move forward. I hope it helps people recognize where they are in life, embrace their current state of mind, and find a path to something better."

Adding to the momentum, Survive Said The Prophet is set to ignite audiences across Europe and the UK with their highly anticipated EU / UK TOUR 2025, kicking off on June 6, 2025. Demonstrating the band’s soaring international appeal, the London show sold out within just one week of announcement. The tour will also see them perform at some of the world’s most iconic rock festivals, including Download Festival, Rock am Ring & Rock im Park, and Rock for People—solidifying their place among the top acts in the global rock scene.

<![CDATA[Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra Celebrate 35 Years with Star-Studded Greatest Hits Album]]>Wed, 19 Mar 2025 23:28:00 GMThttp://a-to-jconnections.com/visual-kei-jrock/tokyo-ska-paradise-orchestra-celebrate-35-years-with-star-studded-greatest-hits-album
Celebrating the 35th anniversary of their 1989 debut, legendary Japanese ska band Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra released their greatest hits album titled "NO BORDER HITS 2025→2001 ~The Best of Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra~". Details on this release, as well as links to check it out for yourself, can be found below.
This new retrospective album centers around songs featuring guest vocalists, including the band’s latest collaboration "Tell Me, Ouroboros (feat. Asako Miyazaki (SHISHAMO))" and the "NO BORDER" trilogy of songs that echo the band’s boundary-hopping philosophy: "Ichinichi Hana feat. imase & Narashino High School Brass Band", "Vague Me of Summer Days (feat. SUPER EIGHT)", and "Like Flowers Fall (feat. Masaki Suda)". The album also revisits the trilogy of songs that shook up the Japanese music scene in 2001 and 2002: "Mekureta Orange" (feat. Takao Tajima)", "‎Canary In The Sky (feat. Yusuke Chiba)", and "Forest Burning Beautifully (feat. Tamio Okuda)". The 3-CD set concludes with Skapara’s latest song, "Haven't given up yet, have you?".

A total of 51 songs were selected by Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra drummer Kin-ichi Motegi for the 3-CD set, and just like the album’s title "NO BORDER HITS 2025→2001", the lineup of songs perfectly reflects the band’s core theme of “no borders”. The album begins with the song "Paradise Has No Border feat. NO BORDER ALL STARS". This is a rerecording of Skapara’s signature song "Paradise Has No Border" featuring 10 wind instrument performers. These NO BORDER ALL STARS were assembled from past collaborators and celebrity friends of the band who play wind instruments, including the world-renowned actor Ken Watanabe – making his first appearance with Skapara. Watanabe lends not only his trumpet skills but also his voice to the track.

The MV for "Paradise Has No Border feat. NO BORDER ALL STARS" can be found below, as well as links to check out the new greatest hits album in its entirety!

About Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra:
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, the world-famous ska band from Japan, have blended a base of Jamaican ska music with a multitude of other genres via their own unique filter, resulting in an original style they call “Tokyo ska”. The band made their debut in 1989 with their self-titled album "Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra", known to fans as the “Yellow Album”. After various lineup changes, the band currently consists of nine members.

While they first established a solid position as an instrumental band, in 2001 they began to challenge themselves to create songs with guest vocalists, with compositions by the band and lyrics written by baritone sax player Atsushi Yanaka. The trilogy of singles featuring vocals from Takao Tajima, Yusuke Chiba and Tamio Okuda shook up the Japanese music scene, and the 2002 album "Stompin’ On DOWN BEAT ALLEY" went to No.1 on the pop charts in Japan. It was a huge hit, selling 500,000 copies. Since then, the band have worked with countless guest vocalists for sensational matchups that have captured the attention of the music scene, including Hiroto Komoto, Ken Yokoyama, Koji Miyamoto and Kazutoshi Sakurai, along with a trilogy of collaborations with the bands 10-FEET, MONGOL800 and ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION.

Although based in Japan, Skapara have performed in 32 countries around the globe, including appearances at some of the world’s largest music festivals – such as Glastonbury (UK), Eurockéennes (France), Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Vive Latino (Mexico) and Lollapalooza Chile (Chile). They even achieved the impressive feat of becoming the first Japanese artists to perform on the main stage at Coachella (USA) in 2013.

In October 2019, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra received the Best Performance Award in the Alternative category at Mexico’s largest music awards, Las Lunas del Auditorio, in recognition of their live performances that have thrilled audiences in Mexico over many years.

Now celebrating the 35th anniversary of their debut, the band have entered a new phase as they continue to embody the theme of “no borders”, expanding their Tokyo Ska utopia from the forefront of the music scene.

The finale show on Sunday was LUNA SEA’s first solo concert at Tokyo Dome in around fifteen years, and was a life-or-death performance befitting the show’s concept, “a night of resolve”. As the band members left the stage, the venue returned to darkness, and a video began playing on the screen, as the audience looked on with bated breath. When a familiar skull logo finally appeared, the entire dome erupted in screams of joy.

That video announced the third edition of the legendary rock event LUNATIC FEST., which was last held in 2018. LUNATIC FEST. 2025 will be held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, just outside Tokyo, as a two-day event on Saturday November 8 and Sunday November 9, 2025. Meanwhile, at Saturday’s show, The Millennium Eve 2025, LUNA SEA performed with their old friends GLAY for the first time in 25 years. First, GLAY performed fan favorites such as "Kuchibiru", "Pure Soul", "HOWEVER", and "Yuuwaku", followed by LUNA SEA with a series of hits such as "STORM", "IN SILENCE", "I for You", and "ROSIER".

During the encore, the two bands mixed and matched their members for renditions of LUNA SEA’s "TRUE BLUE" with TERU from GLAY on vocals, and GLAY’s "BELOVED" sung by RYUICHI from LUNA SEA. The members of both bands all performed together for the grand finale "WISH", truly a dream collaboration for fans of Japanese rock music.

The joint performance with GLAY coincided with the 35th anniversary of LUNA SEA’s formation. RYUICHI commented, “A lot of things have happened for both of us since that time when so many bands were created, but I’m thankful we can stand on stage together at Tokyo Dome again. GLAY and LUNA SEA will continue to lead the scene!” Everyone in the audience on those two miraculous nights surely felt this sentiment in their hearts.
